Sounds like you've already addressed these, but I'll add them here in case someone with similar problems reads these threads.
I had similar issues in a jeep. Finally tracked it down to the foil 'High Energy' sticker on the ignition module in the distributor had come loose and would occasionally flutter around and cause the engine to sputter and die. Had another similar issue with another jeep. Turned out the rotor in the distributor was cracked and was rotating 15 degrees or so on the shaft. There was enough tension still there that it would return to normal at idle, but move around at anything above that. |

Check the crimps and connections that power the HEI. Where do you power it from?
