Voltage Regulator?

My buddy recently go a 69 C/10 and we noticed that he does not have a voltage regulator, would there be a reason why the PO would have removed it?

He probably put in an alternator with an internal regulator...

I'm guessing the internal type is solid state, and external is not - one less failure point?

Internal does a much better job of voltage control, and is friendlier to electronics.

Well, there ARE solid state external regulators readily available from any reasonably stocked parts store. BUT, the conversion to an internally regulated alternator is a very common upgrade for many reasons including the solid state nature of the regulator in internally regulated alternators.

Very simple to convert to an internally regulated alternator.

Mine is externally regulated, however I do carry an internally regulated spare in the back because it was free. That and the crossover connector so I do not need to splice wires on the side of the road when she craps out.

The points are a mechanical object that will wear out eventually, and I have heard that they voltage surges they cause will kill HEI ignition modules. I have no proof of that.
Have you noticed the lights dimming at idle or the wipers moving slower or the heater fan not running at full speed on high?
It's possible you may have one of the 60 amp alternators which will probably serve you well. If you plan to add cooling fan(s) you might consider the upgrade.
If you have no issues then by all means run the EVR. You can get a digital regulator for about 30 bucks. I think someone mentioned that above.

I have not noticed the lights dimming and the wipers work just fine. I guess I should be ok since I am not having any issues at the moment. Thanks for all the good info guys!
