spray paint over POR15 for topcoat OK?
Thanks everyone for all the help I've been getting lately. I'm getting ready to POR15 my frame, trailing arm and rear-end. I know the por15 is not UV safe and I know it wont see that much UV on the frame ect… But was thinking about just using some Rust-oleum spray paint for a topcoat over the POR15. Will this work? Or would it be better to use this oil base brush on Rust-oleum paint? I'm gonna be brushing on everything on.

I am not a paint guy but initially would think an oil base would be better, sprayed on of course.
I have used that Professional rattle can stuff on a rear bumper over SEM self etching primer and it has held up for a good 10 years. I of course scratched the crud out of my bumper. |

I heard por 15 now making a UV safe product now.
Not sure 100 but worth looking in to. My frame is regular por 15. Couple years in still looks fantastic. RRM

I cannot definitely answer you question of spraying over por 15. However, if you find out it is ok then don't use Rustoleum. I had used rustoleum for years on semi frames and it fades and is a short life product. For a few dollars more use Valspar metal enamel. It holds color much better, last longer and covers exceptionally well. It's rustoleum on steroids.

Re: spray paint over POR15 for topcoat OK?
It is my understanding that if you let the POR-15 dry completely, a topcoat will not adhere very well (unless you sand/scuff it to give it a tooth, or use a special primer). When I painted my frame I let the POR-15 dry to a very slight tackiness (the instructions called it a 'slight finger drag'), then used POR Chassis Coat Black in spots where I wanted a topcoat. In any case, I'd definitely give them a call and ask, it's too much work to have to do it over again if something doesn't adhere well.

Re: spray paint over POR15 for topcoat OK?
You probably only need one coat. But if you want another coat, this is from the instructions: "If the second coat is applied too late it will not adhere because of the slick surface and will peel."
Tomorrow you can use TIE-COAT PRIMER or ETCHING PRIMER that they sell at POR15, or sand/scuff as jonmc56 mentions. Then put another coat of POR15 if you really want it, or just put a primer and/or topcoat on of your favorite paint. I have had success with misting the POR15 with Rust-oleum spray can primer while the POR15 is still tacky, and then you don't have to do anything special. I think for a frame, if it were mine, I would consider it 100% done if you leave it tonight and not do anything more with it. http://por15bc.com/por-15.htm Last edited by dmjlambert; 08-29-2018 at 11:00 PM. Re: spray paint over POR15 for topcoat OK?
I just brushed mine on 2 weeks ago. 1 Coat, no top coat. I don't plan on having the wheels facing up so not concerned about UV. I did my Chevelle in 2002 the same way and it looked great still in 2014 when I sold it.
