GMC's had RR Leals and Chevys Coils, Right?

I have always been under the assumption that GMC's had rear leaf springs as standard and coils as an option an and Chevys the exact opposite. Today I saw a 1969 GMC truck with factory coils and nothing showing on the spid as I thought a GMC with coils would show as an option on the spid. Its an Oshawa Canadian built truck for the Canadian market if that made a difference. The fellow that owns the rucks told me that GMC's built at USvplants for the US maket would have leafs and coils could be ordered and the opposite for Chevys in the US. He said all Cabnadian built truck either GMC's or Chevys came with coils. Pics are this mentined truck.

I am watching this thread. That seems an odd setup. Maybe someone can clear this up easily.

I thought up until the late 60s Canadian GMCs were just like Chevy's (same suspension Chevy engines, etc.) because of the small market and to make replacement parts easier to get. Kinda like Canadian Ford/Mercury, and Dodge/Fargo trucks

If that is correct then it would explain why this 69 has coils.

Re: GMC's had RR Leals and Chevys Coils, Right?

In Canada GMC and Chev typically had coils. I've had one parts Chev and one unknown frame with leafs. 99% of what I see is coil up here. I've not seen a leaf GMC myself other than on a Longhorn. Other than the grill and front fenders and maybe the colored cluster face the trucks were identical. We never got the V6 GMC's up here either.

Re: GMC's had RR Leals and Chevys Coils, Right?

There was retired Mountie that had a GMC and owned it for years and it was nice. In 2001 when I was looking for a truck I was seriously looking at his and we were some money apart on the deal and then I found my pink and white truck and bought it. That GMC had leafs on it and although I didnt know anything about the trucks, other than I liked them, I'm pretty sure it would have been a Canadian built truck.

Re: GMC's had RR Leals and Chevys Coils, Right?

I had an older gentleman tell me one time that coil springs were standard on both. If you look at your G M C spid label with leaf springs you will see where it is an option. I’ve had several coil spring GMC trucks.

Thats what I'm looking for, a GMC 1/2 ton with the coils showing as an option on the spid.

Re: GMC's had RR Leals and Chevys Coils, Right?

I've seen a lot of GMC's locally with leafs...without a doubt, and I'm assuming they are probably Canadian trucks.
On the flip side I've seen a few Chevy's with the leaf option as well....which sometimes surprises people.

...no hard and fast rules or trends on this....which would be keeping with the GM truck approach at the time I suppose.

Re: GMC's had RR Leals and Chevys Coils, Right?

I guess I learned something newabout the trucks. Pictured is a spid from an Oshawa built GMC with the rear leaf spring option which tells me coils were standard on the Canadian trucks.

Re: GMC's had RR Leals and Chevys Coils, Right?

A friend of mine was surprised when he noticed my 67 Chev c20 has rear leafs. It is a Custom Camper, so I always figured that was part of the upgraded suspension. Unfortunatley, my SPID is long gone.

Re: GMC's had RR Leals and Chevys Coils, Right?

While I believe it's more likely to find leafs on 3/4 tons and more so camper trucks it was strictly by choice up here. I've seen Custom Camper 20"s with coils. In high school my summer job was delivering auto parts and sometimes we used the boss's 72 Cheyenne Custom Camper 20. It had coils.

My 1970 Gmc stepside came with trailing arms. There is no mention on the spid being special ordered.

That is correct because your truck is a USA built truck from the Fremont Plant. Its only the Oshawa built GMC trucks for the Canadian Market that came with rear coils as standard equipment like the Chevys with leafs being an option.
