Here's what I discovered. My idle mixture screw was turned out from seat, 4 full turns. This resulted in a very rich idle mixture resulting in carbon fouling the plugs. I replaced the plugs, turned the idle mixture screw out 2 full turns from seat and started. Once running, I turned screw in to stumble, then back out 1/4 turn to smooth idle. In short, carbon fowled plugs can totally fail causing misses and rough running. I suggest a new set of plugs, set idle mixture as I did, and hopefully your problems go away as mine did.

Re: distributor collar
Congratulations!
Did you set the idle mixture screw? Was it far out of adjustment? You should try to figure out why the plugs fouled up. It can be the float level is too high or other reasons.
