I got about 10-15 dana 44 frontends, some were out of 71-72 and some 73-80, anyway how do I tell the difference between them? Thanks for the help, Randy

Especially if they have the flat top knuckles on the passenger side..

Randy,
I believe the d44 from 71-77 have the "flat-top" knuckles(it is a flat part on top of where the tierod end attaches) and 78-^ don't have the flat top, it's more rounded on these models. I saw a set of flat-top knuckles on ebay the other day going for about $70 with 2 days to go. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on the years.

iirc, the 71-72 dana 44 is a bit smaller than the 73-up version. larger axletubes and ujoints, diff is the same.

Randy, im not sure about anything else but if i remeber i read somewhere that the 73 and older 44s use the smaller 230x(?) axle joints and the 74 and newer 44s use 297x u-joints in the axle. this may be incorrect though.

Ryan's close it's the 260x u-joint to the 297x in 73 and newer. Some 72s had the 297x also.
I thought the small axle tube versions appeared in the 70s on certain models while others of the same year got the larger tubes.

My son (orangeuavol) has a 72 Blazer that he just rebuilt the 44 on. It has the flat- top knuckles on both sides and small u-joints. By the way does anyone know where we can get one of the tapered sleaves that is used to bolt the steering arm on. (we lost one).

the 260 is smaller the same size as most dana 30s use, the 297 is bigger. visually without both side to side to compare you just kindof need to know about what each looks like, or measure them.

Here's a cross reference for the different u-joint manufacturers. NAPA sell the precision.

The difference is about a 1/4" in width.

Both my 70 and 71 have flat top knuckles.

If you really want to know what the axles are, get the BOM numbers off the axle tube and run them here http://www.drivetrainsuperstores.com/. You can get the original year and application.

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed.
