Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Did this a couple days ago. '68 C10, all original, long bed. 61k miles, just replaced the rear brake shoes last year. Think this will be the year the old farm truck gets conditioned air.... was thinking under dash unit, not sure yet.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Changed the alternator belt (11A1345)... 5 min job. Checked-out the alternator and water pump to make sure they sounded OK. And "while I was in there", I painted the fan pulley cause it was flaked and ugly.

That would look nice left alone .
I'm partial to original paint and have elected to keep our truck white on light red 544. One bedside and a couple other spots were touched up by the original owner before we bought it in 1987. Being it's mostly oem and it took the paint 55 years to look like this I'm also liking the patina. Has anyone used any patina clear products successfully? (i.e. Poppy's Patina)

Nice, once I get my 72 done.
I’m going to chop the 70 big block with the grandson and make it a starter project and see where it goes.

Drivers side bodywork done. Tedious but ended up looking good. Passenger door should go better.

Looking good, but I'm curious why you have a gas cap there? Most guys who shave door handles also put the tank in the bed.
Now I'm no proponent of ditching the back-of-the-seat tank. I've had two trucks with the tank forward of the axle, [a '67 K/10 Sub and a '71 K/1500 Jimmy] and fuel flow and fuel pump issues come with the territory. And those are Factory installations.
Mechanical fuel pump works just fine in my '68 C/10 Stepside.
Good on you for having the guts to keep the gas behind the backseat.

Honestly I considered moving it but read that it can be a pain for the reasons you mentioned. I bought the truck with shaved doors and it had a myriad of issues with the factory latches and I just got fed up with them. My last pickup had them for years and I had no issues.

I may look into a flush gas cap soon but I doubt I'll move the tank.

I kept mine behind the seat, no regrets.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Thank You! Picked up in Redding back in 87 used sparingly driving to work, firewood and hunting. Always a beast (350 with power nothing, 205 and 465 all orig with 120k).
I've always wanted to restore, but kind of liking the work truck vibe. The post above about the comet paint treatment made think/realize I've washed/polished out many times and the paint needs something to top it off if it's going to last much longer.
PS anyone know what rims I have there? I believe they may be square body jimmy. A guy offered them to me as he said he didn't like the look of the white spokes that came with the truck.
I'd like to find oem rims and caps.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I agree, I definitely wouldn’t paint that either. A buff and wax would look great.

I think those are aftermarket “wagon wheels” but there may be a more technical name for them.

PS - I bought my 68 in Redding too…

My 68 developed a miss and it ended up being a cracked distributor cap so I changed it and the points . So out came my high tech distributor adjusting tool. Most youngsters won’t even have a clue to what it is .

I have it in the original box . Price sticker was 34.99 so back in the day it wasn’t a cheap item

Maybe you could wire in a USB or Serial Port Adapter?

Have a usb plug in my cigarette lighter, and my son (13) goes "I can't believe this truck has usb but no a/c".

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I ran up to the Pick-A-Part in Knoxville and picked me up a set of Honda Accord door weather strip to try. For less than $20 I have new weather strip for the truck. Now, I need every other piece for the truck!! Lol!

Also, after reading one of the thread about VIN being on the frame I had to check mine just to be sure. Yes, the VIN plate and the frame match. Another plus on the day for my truck.
