Question widening x-member

not long ago I asked about installing a '78 G body front frame in my '68. I was told the G body track width is 7" narrower than our trucks.
since then I have been thinking. what if a person was to cut it down the middle & widen it about 5". ( I am thinking that 2" would be good for room to turn wheels inside fenders.) granted I would need to make the center liks longer, no problem. has anyone else had this thought or tried it before? any engineers here that can help? (Jewels?) I really want the geometry & ride quality. I know there are places like Fatman & Heidts that have real nice kits, but I am kind of old school & like to fab. for myself.

Well, im no engineer, but from a backyard mech/fab guys point of veiw, i would probably think about playing with wheel offset. If you run 10" wide wheels, you canprobably make up 2 1/2- 3" per side. Or just go for the stub that would be about the proper width(camaro?). This mod is not something i have tryed......so i dont have too much advice. Best of luck, crazyL

It would probably be tricky. You will lose your motor mount area, so you would have to fab something for that too. You have to come up with something to steer with. Oilpan clearance, ground clearance....
Lots of factors, I'm not saying it can't be done, just that it will take a lot of work.
