Re: 1968 GMC C10 - Ben's got new steel
you are doing a good job on the welding. It is a little funny looking to see trailing (sp) arms on a GMC. Most have leaf springs like my '70.

Re: 1968 GMC C10 - Ben's got new steel
I decided to use an extra driver side cab corner and cut and splice it into the new one I put in that was not lining up. Seems to have a better alignment. A little body fill should cover up all the welds.

Nice job... Definitely better alignment. If you are going to do this much work.... do it right. That's what my dad told me anyways....

Re: 1968 GMC C10 - Ben's got new steel
I hate body work...
Last Friday I purchased: Single Stage Red (Gallon) Primer (Gallon) Associated other chemicals. $720! damn I really thought I was only going to spend like $200 - $250. Did I mention I hate body work!

Re: 1968 GMC C10 - Ben's got new steel
Today went just about as bad as can be.
Rented a compressor to start painting. Long weekend, and the stores are closed. I had female quick fittings for he air drier and needed males. Managed to swap fittings around to make that work. Next, started reading about the Nason paint I bought. Started trying to familiarize myself with the ratios, and application times/coats etc. Noticed that I did not have primer... (I had been using spray can primer for after I welded) I had planned to do a full primer coat and then paint. That plan fell apart quickly. First coat of red single stage. This is after the second or third. Don't remember.

Re: 1968 GMC C10 - Ben's got new steel
So I got the top side sprayed grey. I thought about the original off white per the factory, but thought it looked better with the Grey that whoever else painted it did it with. Picked a Chevy Grey and sprayed it last Saturday morning.
Windshield guy came today and installed a brand new window and seal. Finally before the sun ran away tonight, I sprayed the crap out of the new metal with rust check. Note small dark puddles under the rockers.

DUDE! You are killin it!...seriously making headway Ryan. Please give us some more details on how the spray job went, ie. outdoors? kind of gun? brand of paint, etc. Also more info on your windshield install. Were you alone or did you have help? do tell do tell

Re: 1968 GMC C10 - Ben's got new steel
Thanks. It was slow going. But now its really taking shape. Seeing more progress with less work!
I paid a company to do the windshield. I was scared I might break it. I have done a back window before (string and weather stripping) but was a bit scared about doing the windshield and the curves. I think it was $488 all done. Spray Job outside... Do not recommend anyone do this! The amount of prep and bodywork, find yourself somewhere indoors to spray. That said, the Red had a lot of things fly into it. Bugs, spores... dust. I didn't spray the roof grey for a week or so. The grey came out much better. (different day, and perhaps the bugs don't care for Grey!) Because I didn't spray the grey right away, I had to scuff it with a green pad and that took away all the imperfections. Do many people do the windshield themselves? I thought about it, but for $100, they installed it.

Re: 1968 GMC C10 - Ben's got new steel
took much longer than I expected. A lot of smaller details that took a lot of time.
Unfortunately putting the drum brakes and manual master back on (next years project will be the bed floor and disk brakes). Decided to paint the master with some leftover paint I had.

Re: 1968 GMC C10 - Ben's got new steel
Decided to add some extra gauges, but not the expensive way. Also found a OE bench seat. I think trucks this old need a bench...

Re: 1968 GMC C10 - Ben's got new steel
Looks like you've got it buttoned up for the winter!!!
My 68 (when it was last running, too long ago) was one of my favorite vehicles to drive, because of the bench seat... |
