Wheel ring???
Are these necessary for the wheels? What is the correct name for them?
I only had one on the drivers side wheel. The lugs are much smaller on the passenger side wheel. Can I run without them. I can't see what good they do.

Re: Wheel ring???
I believe those are supposed to help locate and hold the wheels on. They are only used on dually trucks. The wheel studs should be the same on all 4 corners of your truck. I don’t remember what year but at some point the studs went from 1/2 to 9/16 and along with the bigger studs they started using those rings. Could be someone swapped some later model parts on to your truck.

Yea this thing has parts of all ages on it. The drivers side is 9/16" studs and the passenger side are 1/2". I think I'll swap them out to the 9/16" for more meat. I found a couple of sets on E bay I may buy a set. The rear wheels don't have them either.

Re: Wheel ring???
Those rings are necessary because the wheels themselves are not coined at the lug holes ( countersunk with raised rings ). You can't use tapered seat lug nuts with those wheels without those rings. You would need flanged lug nuts to eliminate those rings.
I had those kind of wheels/rings on an 81 c3500 years ago. |

Thanks, I flipped all the lug nuts around so that the flange is up against the wheel. I want be driving it much this winter so I'll see if I can find another ring are the lugnuts.

Re: Wheel ring???
I have them on several 80's,1 ton trucks.
They compress the wheel to the hub, strenthening the wheel. Without them the wheel will eventually develop cracks around the lug holes. Mike. |
