Another turbo ls
This has been a while coming. The truck is a 64 i took on trade a couple years ago and didn't have a plan for but after driving a friends malibu with a turbo 5.3 it was just so versatile Ive decided on doing something similar.
So far I have a 1999 5.3 with a elgin 1840p cam and pac springs, coming shortly is a 7875 and log manifold. Trans is a th400 with a summit nitrous 10" 3200 converter. The truck has a open 3.73 12 bolt from a 67 which I have a posi coming for. The suspension is drop spindles with 2" drop springs in front and 4" drop springs in the rear where I'll be adding a c notch and 2" blocks. Lots more to come... |

Re: Another turbo ls
I had time this morning to get some stuff done. Cam and valve springs installed, converter mocked up which was a win because i was figuring on having to elongate the flex plate holes but the summit converter came through and the inner bolts lined up!
$20 spacer and the 5.3 bolts up Waiting on some stuff to do the turbo feed and drain which i believe i'll put in the timing cover, i just don't wanna drill into my new f body pan. After that in it goes grease and all |

Re: Another turbo ls
I am KEENLY interested. I bought the VS Racing billet 7875 kit for the LQ4/4L80E I have for my '61.
I need to live vicariously through you until I can begin my truck. Please post LOTS of pictures.

Re: Another turbo ls
Thanks for the interest, I love the 61! I'd have gone with a 6.0/4l80e but I had the th400 already and I wanted drive by cable mostly I didn't care if it was a 4.8 5.3 or 6.0 for what i'm doing.

Re: Another turbo ls
Today i got in a test fit of the motor and checked to see how the drivers side truck manifold would fit, its close but with the flange chopped off and V band it i think it'll work out.
random truck pic I was concerned as about these cpp frame mounts that were with the truck but the f body pan seemed to fit okay |

Re: Another turbo ls
My 2" blocks and c notch showed up today, so i figured i throw the blocks in to see how the truck will sit before i do the rear end up. I was shocked to find how much higher it is then my orange truck which has 5" drop springs and 1" blocks both trucks have a 6" rear drop total. Now the orange truck has been together for about 12 years so I know its sacked out some in the rear (which i like) just didn't realize it was that much. Now here's some pics
Once i get the motor and trans in I think I'll be good with how it sits. 6" drop done with newer 4" springs 2" blocks Heres my orange truck for comparison of 6" drop with sacked out 5" springs 1" blocks Both trucks are sitting on 15" rims |

Re: Another turbo ls
I got the motor and trans in today and the timing cover drilled and tapped with 1/2" npt for the turbo oil drain along with drilling and tapping the oil cooler block off with 1/4" npt for the oil feed. Now if my log manifold would show up.... anyway here's a couple pics
greasy mess looking for a home I thought the truck pan would be a little low so I sprang for the f body pan but looking at it in the truck I think would have only hung a little bit below the crossmember though being a cast pan I'm glad its tucked up there |

Re: Another turbo ls
Is the next pan hanging about an inch or so under the frame, the tranny pan?

Re: Another turbo ls
I got my log manifold today which is very exciting now I can see how things are going to fit and do the hot side.
Also chopped the flange off the drivers side truck manifold, fits nicely |

Re: Another turbo ls
Well today started off with big plans to get my posi in but I didn't have enough carrier shims left from the last time i did a rearend to get it right. So one more thing added to the list of needs. I did get one C notch welded in though. In the mean time i gotta research what size inter cooler i can make fit with minimal butchering of the core support. It feels good to be working on this truck instead of it just taking up space.

Re: Another turbo ls
That is an eBay cast manifold from a company called race mmi. Its actually for a 2002 style truck they said but it looked just the KB racing one that I was gonna get. Long story short the price was right and I didn't have to wait so i took a chance and it fits nice so far.

Re: Another turbo ls
Got my carrier shims and was able to finish jamming the posi in. Also finished the c notches and got the truck back sitting on the ground.
This rear end is kinda temporary I'd prefer a little higher ratio but I just can't justify spending big money on a truck 12 bolt with its small pinion and only 30 spline axles, if decide to put stickies on it i'll spring for a 35 spline S60 or 9" |

Re: Another turbo ls
Yes! I wanted one of the fahler ones his were the best deal for sure. When you look up racemmi do it without the space, my bad for not putting it as one word in the prior post. Its a hot parts kit, if you wait for one of those 15% off eBay deals its not too bad I thought. I'll be butchering the crossover some as it hangs too low for my taste but it did fit up there. I also don't want the wastegate down there, Ill probably be putting it on the turbine housing. Overall I'm pleased with the kit as far a deal I'd say its fair for what it is, with the 15% off of course.

I finally got some more stuff. VS racing 7875 billet and a cx racing intercooler 25x12x3 which looks like it'll fit nicely with only cutting for the elbows. Now to get to work haha. |
