1989 c6000 GCWR
Hello,
I have been searching for days, called the DOT and still have no answer about the weight ratings for this truck. I did not see a sticker on the door when i looked at the truck and just did not think it would be so hard to find out the numbers. the VIN is 1gdc6d1b4kv508010. it is a 1989 C6000 dump truck. I need to haul a ~15-17k pintle hitch trailer legally. GM heritage support said 10K but that can't be right???? thanks, Chris |

I was under the impression that as long as you had enough license (ie plates;26,000, 54,000, etc) to cover your total weight you would be ok as far as DOT is concerned. Is that not correct?

Re: 1989 c6000 GCWR
what little i know about playing with dot . . . try that and see just how fast your wallet goes from full to empty with fines .
in most states you can not reg above what it was max for from the factory . then what your trailer is max for . then add up empty weight of both and this is how much you should be able to haul . but dont load the trailer wrong and be over on the truck and under on the trailer cause this will get you a ticket . i have a nice 88 gmc 7000 i would love to keep but saddly for me non cdl license guy i am i cant drive it with air brakes and dot around here love to play with everyone .

I see 3/4 ton trucks here quite often with 24k plates on them. Not saying it’s legal or not but Missouri hands then out. What does one do in the situation the op is in when the gcwr is na?

I ran the VIN Number this morning and one site recognized it, but they wanted $14.95 to see it. Wish I new more about the newer trucks. Have you determined where the GVW Tag should be? Again, not sure about the newer trucks, but the older trucks have a Metal Plate either tack welded or riveted.

But evidently even the Law is also unsure about it, lol. Some cops say you can, others say you can't. If I had one, I was going the copy the info I got from DMV and carry it with me. But although I checked on a few trucks, I never bought one in question. As they are pretty rare. My old truck license ran out when CDL's were implemented back in the early 90's. I could never understand the big deal about Air Brakes anyway. I started using them when I was 11 years old. I thought they were great. You want to stop, you press on the pedal, lol. I sold my last Air Brake truck back in 1990.

Re: 1989 c6000 GCWR
The decoder I found says that truck has a 14K to 16K GVW with hydraulic brakes, and had a 366 gas engine from the factory. Couldn't find anything about the GCWR.
