Was the 400 small block an available option in`72 4wd?Anybody seen this?I don`t have original glove box door(chromed).My CustomDeluxe has one and the #`s are for`72.The truck is otherwise all original(w/many,many options)I`ve never seen this before.I know the big block wasn`t available in the 4wds.

The sbc 400 was not available in the 72 trucks. In a 2wd, the 402 was listed as a "400".

I would check the suffix code out to see what the engine in your other truck came out of.

I know that everyone says that the sbc 400 was not available in our trucks, BUT I had a 2wd 72 cheyenne that was all original with a sbc 400. It was on the options sheet on the glove box. When I want to get parts the parts guy at the dealer said the truck was probably ordered late in 72 and that the 400 just coming out in the trucks for 73. I also had a 1967 camaro that the vin said it was a v-8, but it was really a 6 cyl. This car had 50k miles and all original also. Thirty five years ago chevrolet was alot more flexible when you ordered something, you could change you mind and they would let you. Not all the paper work would be corrected though. That's the explanation I was given.

I've heard exactly the same thing....that they were not available but then again owners of original trucks pop up and say they have one. I had a 400SB in my K20 but it was put in. It was the correct year block and everything but not original to the truck.

Do you have a picture of the glove box sheet?

No, I sold that truck years ago to another board member, before there was a board. He then sold it at a truck show. Last thing he knew, it was going to Canada. Boy, I really wished I still had it, a nice swb stepside cheyenne with a 400 sbc.

I would be interested in seeing the suffix code off of the engine. They usually indicate what the engine was installed in. Also, if it came with the truck it should have part of the vin no. on the engine tab. As mentioned Chevrolet would bend the rules at times so it seems there is always an exception. If it can be documented than that would be really interesting!
