High trucks are hard to work on...
My K20 is no Bigfoot but it requires a step stool to work in the engine compartment. On the other hand, when I pulled the trans and T-case out I could sit cross-legged underneath it in the trans tunnel. Saturday I was installing my moon visor and couldn't reach the center of the front top of the cab (currently has a camper shell). So with one foot on the ladder and one placed carefully on the cowl I moved into position. Then I made a real bad decision when I put my knee on the windshield for balance. CRACK! It shattered from side to side and top to bottom. Well at least that $2.40/month for glass coverage will be worth the hassle. Live and learn.

Re: High trucks are hard to work on...
YEAH!
I've got a wooden box for under the hood work,...and a lot of the time I'll open the door and step inside to access the windshield/hood/roof. But, like you say, SunSoaked, work underneath is effortless,...unlike my musclecars! Sorry to hear about the windshield. Glad you've got insurance! Best of luck with your truck! Todd.

Re: High trucks are hard to work on...
Thanks for the lead Sweetk30. I may have to put one of these on my Christmas wishlist. Just spent part of the weekend installing and testing different springs on an advance kit for the distributor. Pain to reach and work on even with a stepladder (I've got 4" lift and 33's).

You used to be able to get them from the Borg... Home Depot and Loews. I haven't looked recently but I believe they were available in the 2100south & I15 Home Depot in Salt Lake City about a year ago. I use one all the time on lowfloor transit coaches and transit rail cars to reach the light racks and upper electronics cabinets. Much easier on the feet than a stepladder.

Re: High trucks are hard to work on...
yep my k30 is 3" lift and 33" tires and its super easy to work under the hood now . and the BIG WIDE LONG platform = me felling super safe bending over the fender now .
and i looked every place and wernner ladder co dont sell them anymore . but in my searching i happen to stumbble on this one and its he exact same minus the name brand sticker . i compared it to the wernner one the contractor had when working here .

I have one of those too. It comes in handy when I'm Detailing. I also had one that hangs on the tire, but my brother took it.

Re: High trucks are hard to work on...
too bad about your windshield....mine broke about 9 yrs ago, my deductible for a new window was $200, the local glass shop installed one for $185, was not even worth making a claim...and i too will be taking my visor off, painting the truck, but it will go back on...and it can be a real pia getting the middle screws, espc with a 8" lift and 39's...

Re: High trucks are hard to work on...
Pic of said mistake. Hey dieseldawg, I'm contemplating installing "nutserts" (threaded rivets) and stainless steel machine screws instead of the supplied sheet metal screws. It would make removing and reinstalling the visor a snap.
When I broke the window, I just put the visor back in the box knowing it was coming off for new glass anyway. |

Re: High trucks are hard to work on...
lowered trucks are no fun either , need a couple jacks to get it up high enough to get it started if you want to work under it and get a sore back when working on the engine

Re: High trucks are hard to work on...
I've had a Fold-a-way license plate bumper step on my '74 K20 for years and it has really come in handy for quick under hood checks, oil, coolant, tuning, etc. Its not too easy to see in the picture and its still a big first step to get up on it so I ended up using the step ladder while doing the engine install. Says it has a 250lb capacity and no one gives it a second look until I point it out to them so it's concealed and blends in pretty well.

Re: High trucks are hard to work on...
Man those steps are all way nicer than the milk crate I'm used to using.
