Firewall modification for American Autowire

bought the American Autowiring kit for my 68. The square hole for the wire bulkhead needs to be enlarged. What have you guys cut the firewall with? Dremel cutoff tool?

Thanks, Larry

A dremel with a cutoff wheel is what I used as well. I also used one of the grinding stone attachments to smooth the sharp edges.

Re: Firewall modification for American Autowire

I tried opening it up with a jigsaw and a metal blade while we have the front clip off, but that was a bust. Firewall was not flat enough for the short metal cutting blade. Used a 4” grinder with a cut off wheel, but I see the Dremel as being the best tool if you are under the dash.

You can drill rows of 1/16" holes and then file it flat...not fun even with the clip off.

I think you could flip the template.....I drilled mine from the inside, filed from both sides. Nice thick sheet metal, makes my neck hurt just thinking about it...Good
Luck...

I did it from the engine bay. Seemed a little easier to me than from in the cab. Be careful of the sound deadener/insulation if you have it installed or trim it back cause it will catch fire.
