Cold & rainy
I decided to look at the brakes on my 71 today. I've had some minor issues with them so I figured today was as good as any to look at them.
The pedal had way more play than I like so I got to looking at it. It had some play in the pin that hooks to the master cylinder rod. I started by taking the booster loose from the bracket and placed 2 washers on the bottom 2 bolts and 1 washer on the top 2. This took the play out of it completely. I didn't get to drive it yet it's pouring down raining so that will happen later. I then decided to paint the master cylinder so I cleaned it up good then used the black caliper paint. Man what a big difference it made. I may paint the top red but I think it would be worthless after putting the hold downs on a few times.

Re: Cold & rainy
Nice! Can you step me through the process with your master cylinder? Did you remove it?
I just put a whole new booster, MC and prop valve assembly on mine and the MC showed rust after only a few days. It'd be great if I could clean mine up like that.

I then just wired brushed it down good with a big brush and a small one. I got it as clean as possible then wiped it down with brake cleanner. Let it dry good and then brushed on the paint. I didn't take it loose but if you want it want hurt a thing.

Re: Cold & rainy
This stuff is thick so put it on thin. I did 2-3 coats. I'm thinking about doing the top in red also.

Re: Cold & rainy
That's correct, it's amazing how such small details can make such a huge impression on the over all look.
I'm retiring at the end of this year and plan on a one a week detail of my 71.

Re: Cold & rainy
One more question, Andy: when you cleaned and painted did you do this with the MC lid on or did you remove the lid and mask it some other way?
Thanks, Jim

Re: Cold & rainy
I took the keepers off and just let the top sit there.
