Carseats in a 70 c10?
So I'm sure this has been brought up before, I searched but didn't come up with much.
Is it legal to have kids riding in the cab in a carseat in our trucks? Does forward facing vs. rear-facing matter? Ages matter? I live in NC, I'm sure the laws might vary by state...

You're right about the laws varying by state. In New Mexico, it is legal for children to ride in the cab of a pickup truck as long as they meet all of the requirements for safety seats/restraints that apply in any other vehicle (and if the passenger air bag switch, if so equipped, is turned off).

From what I can tell, it is legal in NC as well. I'm always just worried I'll get pulled over for it. I get some funny looks from people on the road sometimes!

Here is the text of North Carolina's statute: http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/EnactedL..._20-137.1.html
It looks like it is basically the same as ours. |

Re: Carseats in a 70 c10?
bumping this thread up to see if I can get any more thoughts on the subject.
when I was riding with a kid a couple days ago, I was thinking.. since we only have lap belts.. wouldn't it be safer if they DIDNT have a booster seat? lets say for a 5 year old or so.

Re: Carseats in a 70 c10?
I spent the money for nice aftermarket shoulder harness style belts for my truck so my granddaughter to ride in relative safety, shes 13. I bought a large size car seat for my grandson, hes 6, first grade. When they both are riding he sits in the middle. His seat is held in by the lapbelt down low and it has those hooks built in to it that I attach to the back of the bench seat down low on the springs. Plus it has its own built in safety harnesses. I feel pretty safe if they are both riding with me that way. And I don't care what anyone says newer cars are a ton safer to ride in than our old trucks. Saying that our trucks have so much steel around them for protection is ridiculous. New cars are built for safety. Just do your best to protect your kids when riding in our trucks so they can enjoy the experience. My grand kids love riding in my old stuff.

Re: Carseats in a 70 c10?
.
FWIW I put in 3 point harness for my safety and so I could install the safety seat for my 6 and 5 year old daughters. They both love riding in the truck! If a cop decides to question me on it I'll be happy to explain to him/her that in 1967 not only were children allowed to ride without belts of ANY KIND but there were no such things as child safety seats either. While I haven't checked the law here in TX regarding this, I am aware of the fact that there could be restrictions. My take is that this is my truck, my family and my prerogative. So far.... So good.... BTW facing forward for my kids is OK due to their sizes and the fact that there are no air bags involved! I use the seat belt to anchor the child and seat as per the instructions on the seat itself. Hth, -klb

Re: Carseats in a 70 c10?
My daughter didn't ride in the truck until she was about 3. She is almost 6 now. I usually let her ride in the middle with just the lap belt. If we are going out on the highway, I'll grab the car seat and put her in the passenger's seat with the shoulder belt.

Re: Carseats in a 70 c10?
Unless it has side impact protection, I don't see the point with just a lap belt. I always thought the whole point of a booster was to better align them with the shoulder belt.

Early car seat. Not sure how I survived the 60’s.

This is from buckleupnc.org, relating to 15 passenger vans...but I expect could be applied to our trucks:

Re: Carseats in a 70 c10?
When I was a little guy, my mother drove a 54 Chevy 2 dr.
I would sit right next to her, and when she would brake, her arm would swing out and whap me in the chest. Hard! 60's safety!!
