TH350 install on a 67 C20 driveshaft drama
Swapping out the SM465 for a TH350 and getting near the end. I have had the driveshaft shortened and have run into an installation issue. I can't install the front half of the 2 piece driveshaft. The shop that shortened the driveshaft installed a slip yoke. So now the front shaft has the slip yoke and the carrier bearing installed. The assembly combined, by my wrestling is to long to wiggle in place. Unfortunately I failed to take pictures. I do not plan to swap out for a 1 piece. I think the problem is that I should have a slip yoke which allows for bolting the u-joint versus the pressed in type. I am looking for confirmation or suggestions. For those that have done this, what yoke did you use? Appreciate the help.

108 views and no comments, so I figure if I add some pictures, maybe this might spark some thoughts. Also does anyone have a 67 with an automatic that could snap me a picture of their driveshaft for reference? The first picture is looking towards the rear

Re: TH350 install on a 67 C20 driveshaft drama
The slip yoke is right it slides into trans tailshaft then to the center carrier bolts down the out to the rear pinion. They do make different lengths of slip yokes for these, Slip the DS in the trans until it bottoms out then pull back 3/4 to 1" that is where it should ride and it should bolt up to the center carrier support before you bolt that down you need to wrestle it into the rear pinion then you should bolt in the center

Looks correct to me. Mine uses the same carrier on the front shaft but it is mounted from the top instead of the bottom.

Re: TH350 install on a 67 C20 driveshaft drama
Thanks for the responses. Kaycee, I know how it should be installed, but the distance of the shaft is greater than the space I have to install. I measured the shaft as per the driveshaft people, so i know that physically it will fit the space. In one of the pictures I have the carrier bearing resting on the mount, but do not have the yoke on the trans. If I could put the driveshaft and carrier bearing thru the cross member opening, then i could easily slide it all back into place. Problem is that the mount for the heavy duty stock carrier bearing is towards the front. I feel like the yoke should be bolted to the trans and an additional slip assembly should be on the front driveshaft half. Also it does appear, from my limited research, that how the cross member and the carrier bearing are installed was different between the C20's and C10's, also different from 67 to 68.

Take the metal covering off the carrier bearing carefully and the rubber part will fit thru the crossmember hole. Then just reassemble it and bolt er down.
Mine was setup the same way and that’s how I did it.

clay68c10, sometimes the biggest problem can be resolved with the simplest solution. I will be going home tonight and carefully tearing that damn carrier bearing apart. Thanks

A new carrier bearing at this point is always wise...

toolboxchev, I totally agree, but I had that one replaced when I swapped out the rear end a few years back and have put limited miles on it. Its just dirty from sitting, but is still nice and tight.

Did this work? I'm swapping my sm420 for a saginaw and am looking at the same problem with my 2 piece shaft. Carrier is in front of the crossmember and trans takes a slip yoke.

Re: TH350 install on a 67 C20 driveshaft drama
Snoopy1402, yes it does work. Pushed the driveshaft thru stabbed it into the trans, put the bottom of the carrier bearing back on, just need to put some bolts and cotter pins in, then its time to hit the road. That is if my radiator supports ever show up. Thanks to all for their support and suggestions.

Awesome. I've got everything to start my swap in a few weeks but didn't know how I was going to address that issue.
