HO72 question - brakes
Ok so I can't quite find my answer, so I'm hoping the experts can help me. I am looking to buy brake parts for my 157" wb 1970 c30 to get it road worthy. Rockauto has "except 11,000-lb" listed on most of the rear end brake parts. I know there is an 11,000-lb gvwr axle that is 10-lug. Mine is an 11,000-lb axle (listed on the door jamb), but it's 8-lug. So I believe it's a standard HO72 rear end but rated at 11,000-lb because the HD springs (G50). So my question is am I correct in assuming the 11,000-lb exception does not apply to my truck?

Re: HO72 question - brakes
Not a definitive answer, but I think you are correct in assuming they mean except the 11,000# axle. That is how the 10-lug HO110 option is listed on the SPID and it would most definitely use different brakes. I have a cab from a heavy C/30 but don't think there's a VIN-plate to compare weight ratings, but I believe those have a higher rating shown. It's funny, all DRW 1t trucks are "over 10,000#". In Maryland you can't register one below and you can't register a 3/4t over. Those 5 & 10 lug 1t trucks could haul well beyond 11k.

Re: HO72 question - brakes
Bowtie I think if your drums are 13 x 2-1/2 they should fit.
I just ordered a pair of rear 13 x 2-1/2 drums from Centric to have on hand since parts for these years are getting hard to come by. I also am going to order front and rear shoes, front drums and complete parts kits for both as money permits. I scored a set of good turnable 68' front drums and bearing hubs from a another site member. Just want this stuff on the shelf to possibly save having to swap out rear diff. and front suspensions. |

Re: HO72 question - brakes
I have brake drums used. They are from a 72 gmc Sierra grande 3500. Havent measured them yet. But think they take 3 inch shoes.. can get you measurements later today. The truck they came out of is a 3500 gmc with leaf springs. Like a longhorn with extended bed. We put in a Dana 60 with 3.54. We already sold the center section but have everything else still. Let me know if you need any parts?

Thanks guys! That’s all helpful. I know I at least need brake parts, so it’s good to know I have a few options.

Re: HO72 question - brakes
Ok just went and measured drums. They are 13" drums. They take 2 1/2 inch shoes. So they are 13x2 1/2. And just to let you know mine are turntable. And in good condition. Have backing plates and all hardware. Adjusters are free and usable.
