Gas tank relocation

OK, so just like everybody here I have the gas tank located behind the seat. I heard a rumor that the pinto's gas tank fits between the frame rails no problem and that the filler neck can be placed behind the liscense plate. Has anybody else moved their gas tank from behind the seat to under the bed. I would be interested in how you did it and around how much it cost.

Plenty members have moved theirs, but the PINTO part might not be the common link. Most use Blazer tanks. Not saying it can't be done, but that's a new one on me.

that tank looks like it may hit the ground in my truck. I'm giving my rid a 3inch front drop and a 4 inch rear drop.

I have 67 chevy and relocated the gas tank between the frame in front of the rear bumper. I then cut a hole in the bumper and put in a flip down license plate for the filler spout. I have a three inch home made body lift on the truck and six inch suspension lift. We used a blazer gas tank, that i purchased from a GM parts store. Check out the images.

I did a pretty custom install of a 31 gallon blazer tank from an 80 Blazer under my 68 longbed. I have a 3/5 drop and am going to a 4/7, and the tank will still be 8-9" off the ground. Check my webpage in my signature for the link the pics and tech.

I have a tank that fits tight to the bed, in between the frame rails, hangs down about 3 inches from the frame. I had it reconditioned at Gastank renu,and they stamp it with a lifetime guarantee. My problem was it only hold 12 gallons, which for me wasn't enough. I replaced it with a 20 gallon from a blazer. I am not sure what its worth, if u are interested,pm me, I will take some pics and put a number on it. Oh, I did have to grind the frame about 1/8" to get it to fit. Dont know that it can be f#rd, all the outlets fit the truck.

What was the most difficult part of the relocation?
My truck is a daily driver and I need it to get to work. Will this be something I can get done in a weekend?
Has anybody ever tried to put the fill neck behind a flip down liscense plate?
What about the old gas cap location. Did you leave the cap there to look original, or did you guys weld a patch over it?

I'm thinking someone may have been yanking your chain regarding the PINTO gas tank replacement. Pintos were notoriously exsplosive vehicles.

If you need to do it in a week end then do it except for the hook up and do that on the week end.You can probably do it in a week end but why stress.Mount the tank run the wiring and fuel lines,set up your filler and use the original tank until it's all done and ready to go.Then swap over and go.If everything works then remove the old tank.If something isn't right swap the lines and wiring back and run the old tank until you get it corrected.

I did my tank in a weekend, but leaving the old one intact is a great idea. I welded a patch over the hole, took the old tank out and put some shelving in there.out of jcw I think.The sending unit was the same resistance, so I didn't have to fool with it. I am not sure about the flip down license plate, I think the plate location in the bumper is too low to fill from. Some one used the tail light and posted it on the board, you can search to find it. More then a weekend job I think. With my stepside, I just cut a hole in the fender. Toughst part ? Filling the hole in the cab, the actual tank switch is easy.

The only way you could have a flip down plate for a filler is if you have the tank hanging down below the frame like in the photo above.
The pinto only blew up becouse the bumper was pretty much the only thing between the tank and the car slamming into it.

I used a summit 16 gal. fuel cell (got the idea off another board member) and the mounting strap kit that they sell with it. I think the part # was like 290100 or something similiar. Just had to take the old tank out of the cab and got rubber fuel line from a local parts store, ran it back to the cell, ran the sending unit line back to the sending unit in the cell and was ready to go. Pretty simple install and plenty of ground clearance in the stock-height 67 step. Just watch out where your exhaust runs out b/c you may have to weld in a plate or re-hang part of your exhaust to keep the two from touching. Hope this helps.

I put a RCI fuel cell in my bed 6 yrs ago, but now when it rains, it leaks into the cell at the fill part, and then I have to drain the tank and re-fill it. I am switching to a blazer tank within a few weeks.

Ok my question is....whats the problem w/ stock tank location? Is it that your riding w/ a bomb in the cab?

As much as I drive my truck(few times a month), dont think I will need to change its location.

I talked to the NTSB bfore I moved mine. It was a daily driver at the time, and my wife was concerned for my son's safety. They had no stats or records that far back. So there were no lawsuits or anything. He said when GM moved the tank to outsde the framerail, they got sued unsuccessfully I think, but they moved the tanks inside the framerail the next year. He thought the inside of the cab had some merit-no rusting or stones,or bottoming out. But if it ever leaked, big mess to clean,and if someone dropped a smoke....He thought if if I got a side impact hard enough to rupture the tank, I would probably be fubarred on impact anyway...but the pasenger may not.They would get nailed in an explsion though.So in my siituation, he recommended moving the tank to be enclosed by the frame as long as it didn't bottom out.

the only bad thing about the fuel cell is it only holds 15 gallons and there is no sending unit so i dont have a fuel gauge. i have to just keep checking.
