Help with a 62 oil filter canister paint color!

Since I am having to rebuild my 235 I decided to repaint the accessories on my engine also. I found the correct engine color but I am having a hard time to find out the correct color for my oil canister. I have seen orange/black and blue/orange and black/black. Does anybody know which one is correct for the 62?

The AC filter was light blue with a yellow top. The Fram was orange with a black top. You can tell the difference. The AC uses a 5/8 wrench for the top bolt & the Fram uses a 7/8 wrench. Some Frams have a big wing nut on top.

You know I was just reading an article on the net about this subject. The author had colored pictures of each change in design and color. I didn't save a link unfortunately.

Re: Help with a 62 oil filter canister paint color!

Thanks for the help. I have the 7/8 nut on top so I guess it is supposed to be orange and black. I ordered both decals for the AC and the Fram so I have both. MitchFloyd, the canister in the article for the 60-63 doesn't look like mine, it looks longer than what I have. This is what it looked like when I got it. It looks like the canister was black.

Re: Help with a 62 oil filter canister paint color!

This is a good topic 62Barnfind. One I've been watching. I have a 1962 shortbed with 14,000 original miles I've owned for many years. The filter lid is very dark colored and still has some of the original AC silk screen stencil on the lid . The housing like you say looks black. I haven't cleaned anything yet, or removed the lid. At first glance and by these photos I took years ago looks black also. I'm wondering now if there's a difference between production line canisters and over the counter service replacements ?

Re: Help with a 62 oil filter canister paint color!

thanks for the pics 60-66! Mine is exactly the same and I was wondering if mine was a aftermarket or original too.
Then:

Now:

Not sure what the lid was, so I went Orange. If I painted it black, everyone would a told me it was supposed to be Orange, even though I think it should be all black. LOL

My 60, AC SC-660 filter, black and yellow. Oil filters on 235/261's were a dealer installed option, different AC and Fram units were used.

Re: Help with a 62 oil filter canister paint color!

After our discussion I made a decision to paint mine orange and black. I also ordered some decals for my canister from Jim carter website and it said to paint it this way. I liked them much better than the AC ones on that just went on the top. 60-66 I also found a site to get the generator serial # plates. Here is the restored canister.

Re: Help with a 62 oil filter canister paint color!

I know this is an old thread...but I am about to restore a canister filter. I assume you media blasted it and painted it, but what did you do to the inside...blast and leave raw metal or coat it with anything or paint it? I am probably going to powder coat mine...but not sure how the coating will hold up inside the canister. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Re: Help with a 62 oil filter canister paint color!

You can blast and paint the outside. The inside I would just clean or buff out with some steel wool and leave it raw( no paint / powder coat inside) . Make sure you don't leave any fragments in the can though.

Thanks Mitch...good idea on the steel wool. Probably won't get to it for a couple of weeks, but want to have my plan.
