Is this the original seat cover?
I picked this 74 up today and it is an extremely nice original truck. Dash is still uncracked and the rest of the interior materials are in excellent condition. The gentleman I bought it from is the second owner and didn't know for sure but thought the seat was all original. The build sheet is still in the back but I can't tell if the cover is original or not. I'm not as savvy with the 73-80 trucks. If anyone can actually tell if it is or not I'd appreciate it. I'm more curious than anything.

Re: Is this the original seat cover?
The cover definitely looks original. The seat itself, looks to be an original seat for a GMC, most likely a 73-76. GMC “dressed up” their seats, compared to the Chevy’s. The telltale is this:

Re: Is this the original seat cover?
You have the build sheet for the truck that seat was put in at the factory stuffed in the springs. Does it have your VIN on it?

Re: Is this the original seat cover?
Wow why I didn't think of that I have no idea but thank you for the suggestion, it does match the VIN on the truck. Now the weird thing is the build sheet on the fender says charcoal city and not vinyl but it doesn't look to have been recovered at any point.

Re: Is this the original seat cover?
Senior moments. Glad to see I'm not the only one that gets em.
Not sure what happened with the cloth vs vinyl. It's vinyl now but it's also 45 or 46 years old. I don't think the seat backs were originally uncovered... if that is the back.

Re: Is this the original seat cover?
That is weird that about the cloth & vinyl. And the fact that the seat is a GMC. I have seen 1 seat with the seatback not covered completely, and it was a 74. Maybe the seat got swapped at some point and the previous owner made sure the build sheet stayed with the truck & new seat. It was one of the few that had a build sheet. Of all seats I have acquired, I have yet to find a build sheet with the seat.

That looks just like the vinyl he has. Wonder if it was a dealer stock order vehicle with the GMC that was supposed to have that seat coming down the line directly ahead or behind it so nobody noticed the vinyl vs cloth on the SPID til we looked 45 years later Wonder where the cloth Chevy seat went... I've found four build sheets in truck seat springs... and a bunch more without. Funny you've never found one with as many seats as you've had your hands on.

Re: Is this the original seat cover?
I’ve seen strange things happen, when a vehicle goes down the assembly line, but who knows. But yeah, I have never found a build sheet. Found lots of other stuff though. Just today, tearing down a seat, and out rolls a 12g shell. Never fired.

Re: Is this the original seat cover?
That is interesting. I have owned a lot of old squares (although most of them being 81-87), and I haven't ever seen a build sheet in the seat myself except for in my 68 that had been left parked since the 80's. I doubt this seat has been recovered, I would guess that it was either swapped on the assembly line or at the dealer. The truck has been extremely well cared for and loved. It's a miracle the build sheet has lasted in there as it is brittle and will almost crumble when touched. I also wonder if the vinyl floor is original or a factory replacement as the fit is much better than any aftermarket that I've seen. Although maybe aftermarket was better back in the day. Either way it's a neat and fun little truck but the little things make the whole process a little more fun and interesting. Thanks for all of the info I always learn something new on here.

Re: Is this the original seat cover?
Another odd thing I saw was this label on the leaf springs. Possibly a replacement pack? No way that label lasted 45 years

I've pulled .22 & .308 shells out of a heater box. Interesting what lost stuff comes to light when you disassemble a vehicle.
