Hub Caps-Stainless or Chrome
On the SPID they are listed as chrome but aren't these hubcaps (on a 72) stainless?
Anyone have a suggestion to get rid of some of the scratches and pitting?

3M metal polish may remove some scratches in the chrome. Nothing will get rid of the pitting short of having them re-chromed. Here's an example of stainless, the bowties painted blue post factory.

Re: Hub Caps-Stainless or Chrome
72s are chrome plated, they became stainless in the square years, and could be polished out etc. 69-72 versions harder to find in good condition, and harder to repair. 73+ came with gold bow tie, and 3/4 "outies" are a good find because they can be polished and are easily paintable to match 69-72s (Krylon True Blue a good match). Not sure how to remove scratches & pitting on a 69-72 chrome cap other than lotsa chrome polish - or complete strip, fix, and rechrome, repaint.
EDIT: Oops, sorry Tony, you must posted while I was still typing |

Re: Hub Caps-Stainless or Chrome
That's what I thought. I have the blue bow ties. Plenty of dents. I've been banging the dents out over the winter. They'll end up as driver quality. I've been watching as they come up for sale and I can't swing for the really nice ones now. I have too many other things i need to buy before I get some.
Thanks for the comebacks!!

Re: Hub Caps-Stainless or Chrome
Ya know, they probably are more ochre than gold, I've just always heard them called that and nowadays they are gold-ish on new trucks. I've got a can o paint that matches the original gold/ochre bow ties pretty well, I oughta see what it's named...
