Faded 72 door panel restoration question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Just curious if there is a way to restore the color on these panels that other than readying them? These red ones I just bought are in nice shape and the right color just wanted to know what others have done. You can tell exactly where the handles were when you move the wood grain pieces. They weren't originally on these panels.

The key is using the right products and cleaning the surface properly before treating. I used all SEM products, the adhesion promoter and the colors SEM has it a mach for our trucks. Also important that they are the right sheen. I used a carpet scrub brush and simple green to make sure it was really clean, then I rinsed and did it again. After all was dry I tack it down and applied adhesion promoter, then followed with three coats of color.

That does look awesome. What did you do with the armrests? Mine are real decent but a small imperfection on the inside of drivers one. I am scared repos won't fit properly.

I would patch that with a flexable filler. Then shoot with SEM adhesion promoter, the I would do a couple of layers of SEM texture spray. The follow with two to three coats of SEM color. I had two spots on each panel that I did this with and it is impossible to tell where I did the repair.

I didn't think GM ever made red panels in 72(?) Are they aftermarket or dyed? If the latter, might want to be careful with how harshly you scrub/clean them, that's why I wanted to mention. What's the back look like? I'm interested to know if these are no-kidding original GM panels that came that way. Very interesting! They sure look original - and they look great, I love red interiors in several different color trucks.

They are 100% gm panels. They are standard panels and came out of a c50. Only way to get red ones were from the big trucks. Gm part number is on the back. That's why I don't want to dye them if I don't have to.

Black or white with red interior is one of my favorites. I wonder if SEM makes a matching red dye.

Just like mentioned above, the red was only found in the bigger trucks. Mine were found in a old Coca Cola C60. My guess is that they were a big fleet order to make the red panels.

I sold a fine pair of Parchment panels I had stored since the early '80s (no chalking) to Mike Chopp in MI he used in the Black & White SWB BBC Cheyenne Super he built to sell... $35k 5+ years ago (username 67-72 Trucks?). He said he used recycled glass bead. I also sold him N.O.S. woodgrain panels. I'm telling all these details because that truck was absolutely top shelf ultimate none finer because everything he did really mattered/counted and it showed

I was thinking about something like that and that's why I posted. I figure the panel is the same color right thru but I don't want to wreck them experimenting.
