Re: 28 Model A
This was the big moment! 2 months after i submitted my paperwork for a BC assigned VIN, I got the call from the inspector saying he had the VIN and was ready to do the deed. Loaded the old ford up and couldn't help taking some pics of the whole rig first!

Re: 28 Model A
A couple hours after I dropped it off I got the call from the inspector saying he was all done and it was good to go. Took a short trip to the insurance broker where they printed me off a fresh registration and set me up with an insurance plan, and with that the old ford was no longer a pile of parts, but an actual car! Unbelievable! Only took 2 quick pics before i hit the road(real plates this time!)

Re: 28 Model A
I really hate all the pics are lost, all the documentation and great fabwork pics - shame. Congrats though, well done!

Re: 28 Model A
Yeah, huge bummer about PB's change of service there, but still have all the pics(and tons more) just going to have to start a new thread i guess. Thanks though, thing has been tons of fun so far. Got it registered a month ago and have been driving it everyday since!

Re: 28 Model A
Thanks man! I'll tell ya, it's a great thing to have in the garage!
So after getting the car on the road I was blown away by the amount of wind I was getting blasted by when I was just cruising around. Worse yet, that crisp 5 in the morning air on the way into work was near unbearable! Since driving it was so fun though I ended up enduring the first week, which made me highly motivated to stretch some sort of roof over it on the weekend. And that I did! I call this the prototype roof seeing I just used the same tan material i used for the door panels and some white felt-like material in between the wood and the tan stuff. I thought it might turn it into a bit of an oven with the top but ended up working awesome, made it so much nicer to drive and not bad for heat at all. One pic is of the planning phase and the other is the result. |

Re: 28 Model A
Still was a little bit chilly on the way into work, so i figured if the roof made it that much nicer to drive, roll up windows for the doors would just be the ultimate experience. So with that thought I placed an order at Snyder's for the window regulators, cranks, felts, and all the other stuff that applied and had the glass cut locally. Regretfully I didn't take any pics of the install, only this one after I was done, but you can kinda see the passenger side glass and the window cranks added. So with the window job out of the way, it was time to deal with the starter which was having a tough time cranking the engine after it had some heat in it. Took the failing unit apart and sure enough the brushes were pretty cooked. Local parts store actually had some fresh ones in stock so made a quick trip to grab those and what a difference it made, this starter cranks the hot engine with ease now!

Re: 28 Model A
Congrats on the title and reg! That is a good deal! Those wheels and tires look mint on it! I love the pic of the C10 hauling it too! By the way, how is the turbocharged 350 holding up? I love that truck too.

All I can say is Congrats. Amazing build. This build comes to mind so many times when I'm out in the shop. Thanks for the motivation.

Turns out I'm not the only guy at work with a hot rod! Helped him weld a bracket back onto his radiator and after that there wasn't much else to do other than take some pics of the two together. |

Re: 28 Model A
Very cool! A friend of mine just got his 31 Phaeton put back together. He is on his 2nd set of Cokers and he is still having bad drive ability problems. He's going to put a different set of wheels and tires on it and see how it drives then.

Re: 28 Model A
Seem to be common thing when you read up on those cokers, I saw a thread on the hamb the other day where a guy needed 11 ounces or something crazy like that before one of his cokers would balance out. I'm not sure if i got lucky or if I'm just so used to driving my C10 everyday that my definition of "rides nice" might be a little lower than most.

Re: 28 Model A
So after the insurance expired on the old ford and it had sat parked for a little bit, I started to get the itch to tackle the rust on the doors and trunk. Starting with the passenger door, I cut out the bottom 4" of rust and gave the inners a good coat of por 15 while they were exposed. Made up a new panel and tig'd it in. It turned out okay, after grinding down the welds and hammering them out I got it pretty close. Did the drivers door right after and it came out a little nicer. One day I'll have that near mirror perfect metal finished repair, but I still have a ways to go before i get there.

Re: 28 Model A
With the doors welded up and flattened out as best I could, I gave them the boyd coddington bondo skin and blocked them out. After some primer I think they're starting to look pretty decent.

Re: 28 Model A
Now when it comes to the trunk lid, this was the real challenge. I should've taken more pics, but i was doubtful id be able to fix it. The inner structure was pretty rusty at the bottom and was a little chowdery at the top as well. Outer skin had similar issues as well. Jumped into the deep end and decided to separate the skin from the frame with some custom made pliers and go from there, I got this idea and the confidence to try it from MP&C's thread on that 55 wagon. After the two were apart I replaced all the rusted areas the best I could then gave all the inner parts a coat of epoxy for protection. Only pics I have are after I folded the skin back onto the inner frame, and after it was primed. It was a ton of work but I was pretty happy how it came out in the end.

Re: 28 Model A
Awesome work on the metal repair! It looks very nice. Robert definitely has all the tricks and tips on sheet metal!
Have you had good luck with POR actually stopping the rust?

Re: 28 Model A
Appreciate it Robert! Big thanks for detailing the process as well as you do.
Thanks guys! Thanks man! It's the first time I've ever tried POR, and the decision to use it was mainly because there was a partially used can of it hanging around. At the very least it makes me feel a little better knowing i did something to try and stop the rust, been a couple months so far and looks like everything's holding up okay |
