Paint on NOS sheet metal?

I have a bunch of NOS sheet metal and it all has some sort of black paint. What is it, just some sort of primer? Did the factory mean to have it painted over, or sanded off? Ive had some that was super smooth and some that was full of runs.

I am not sure when E-coat primer starting showing up on factory parts. But I haven't seen many if any runs in it. Do you know the history of the NOS parts? sometimes the original primer fades and starts to rust and people spray rattle can paint to protect the part. I would get some lacquer thinner and wipe it on there. If it comes off on the rag, then you will need to strip it prior to any paint or it will wrinkle it.

X2 on what nightrider posted. there's nothing worse than paint wrinkling.

Parts unwrapped from packages unopened before. I had a tailgate that still had the straps on the box that had a bit of a run. Im not talking crazy bad, just imperfections.

Mostly just curious what the paint is. I don't know what E Coat means.

its an electro plating process similar to powder coat.t I would still do the test with lacquer thinner. Even if its a good two part primer, it will need to be scuffed down and an epoxy sealer sprayed as a base for a minimum. A lot of painters won't even try to guess what it is, they strip it off just because they don't trust what exactly it is. Whatever someone guesses that it is, it's just that, a guess. If you did not spray it on, then there is no real way to be sure what it is.

Interesting info, thanks. I wont be doing anything with the parts right now. Selling a few of the smaller things now and again ... when I bump in to them when Im looking for other things haha.

It is a good primer intended to paint over.

You should get ride of those sheet metal parts ASAP. They are no good with the black coating.

I have bought NOS parts back when they were available from the dealer and still have them. They all have been E coated

like they said it is a primer, just applied differently than you would apply it. I have always sanded it real good then spray my own primer on before block sanding it then apply top coat. if i was unsure I would sand it down to the bare metal and use a self etching primer, you can't go wrong by doing this.

I was looking at a couple of the smaller parts closely and decided that maybe something has been spilled or applied in spots. Surrounding areas are perfectly smooth. Maybe because this small stuff has been knocked around for a lot of years sort of in and out of the wrappers someone has tried to keep them coated where it wore some of the original coating off.

John you never know. I think I mentioned in another thread I might take a couple of pieces to the swap meet and put ridiculous prices on them and see what happens ... Maybe you'll be my guy haha!

If it is e-coat then it is an electro-plated paint.

The body or components are dipped in a vat of paint

The parts are charged electrically, which opens the pores in the metal and allows the paint in. After the dip is complete the charge is cut off, closing the pores and trapping the paint.

The part is immediately rinsed with water to remove any excess.

If all goes well the part is lightly scuffed, both to promote adhesion and to remove any runs/dirt/blemishes and wiped with a tack cloth before baking and the application of the color coat.
