Right turns shut my truck off
First a little background info. It's a '69 C-10, inline 6 (250) with a single barrel Rochester (if that's the right spelling). Fuel tank still in the cab. Runs fine, drive it to work everyday. For the past few days, it has developed a syndrome of some sort. If I am turning into a drive way or parking lot, sometimes I will just hold the clutch in and coast into the drive. If the drive happens to be on the RIGHT, the truck will just stall. I can pop the clutch and she will fire right back up and idle just fine. If I am still in gear and off the clutch, say...in the parking garage where EVERY TURN is a right turn, it spits and coughs like crazy, then as soon as I start going straight, it levels out and runs like new. IT DOES NOT DO THIS ON ANY LEFT TURNS. That's what boggles my brain. I replaced the fuel filter (up next to the carb) two days ago, but the issue still exists. Any engine guru-types have an idea what it could be. It only is an issue in town. If it were still on the farm, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Or I could go NHRA drag. They go in a straight line. I might could get up to 3rd gear in a quarter mile.

Make sure your coil isn't loose and grounding out to the air cleaner or something else.

Any chance it could be water? There is none in the filter, but could some be sitting in the carbs bowl or something? Just a thought?!

Any time I suspect water, I just throw a cup of isopryl rubbung alchohol in the tank. It can't hurt, and if there's water it'll clear it up. I throw in a little, once or twice a year anyways.

I had a Nova that did that on left turns. There was an old tach wire hanging too close to the exhaust & it burned through & grounded out when it swung to the right.

Check the coil and the ignition system. Also if you can, tear apart the carb. I've got a rochester that gives me crap all the time. Turns out the choke plate acuator rod get stuck in a lot of models, so try pulling off the choke plate. If that doesn't work, check the distributor and all the electrical stuff in the engine compartment to see if anything is worn, broken, or being manipulated by other pieces of machinery. And again, CHECK THE COIL!

I plan on taking the carb off this weekend and give her a good cleaning out. Getting close to the end of this tank of gas too, so I might also drain it all out and see how much is gas and how much is water. Thanks for all the suggestions folks.

I had the wire grounding problem on my 72 i was running a 350 thou turns out the yellow wire that goes to the starter from the points coil was just hanging and hitting the valve cover on left turns.
I bought some water dryer upon the advice from the guy at vatozone still did it finally died all the way so i did a roadside diagnostic and found out no fire so i hotwired it from battery to the hei with a peice of wire and when i got home i noticed the yellow wire welded to the valve cover it looked as if it had been hiting for a long time the valve cover had a little burnt spot . |
