WTB: Nice looking Tach Cluster

I had just about decided to get on Ebay and shell out the big bucks and just buy a fully restored or brand new cluster, then backed out when I read :

...."please note that the tachometer is designed to work with a point type distributor, and will probably NOT work correctly with an HEI distributor. There is an available modification to the wiring harness on the internet which would allow the tach to work with an HEI..."

So I decided to at least ask on here first, who (if anyone) is sitting on a nice looking still green un-browned guage set w/ tach and who can tell me what this extra wiring is I need to make the tach work with HEI? I don't care what someones cluster plastic housing / face looks like - I have one new in the box. What I care about is the green backing on the tach and guages and the niceness of the lens - the rest I can handle. I can repaint the needles and install my bezel. What do you guys have I'd like?

Re: WTB: Nice looking Tach Cluster

I have never had a problem with the factory tach and HEI. I guess some people try to wire the tach somehow not using the tach wire on the hei distributor. I always install the proper connector and hei specific plastic retainer at the cap and attach to labeled tach terminal.

I have heard of cheap hei modules giving tach signal problems such as bouncing tach needle. Gm did have a capacitor inline with the tach on most if not all installations, it was screwed the the firewall by the distributor. I have never had to do that on these trucks. I think they smooth out the tach signal if it’s bouncy, again I have never used one or needed one.

Re: WTB: Nice looking Tach Cluster

X2, I run an HEI distributor with a tach and have zero issues. Nice smooth needle movement. Like it was mentioned earlier just use the proper connectors and you’ll be fine.
