70 front end?

Hey fellas, I am thinking about going to look at this truck. It is supposed to be a 71 with a 250- 3 speed. The guys was saying it had the original blue paint but it looks to me from the pics that it has a 70 front end on it. I am new to this body style from the standpoint that I don't know exactly what the interchangeability parts are between all the years. Been more of a squarebody guy for a while. Guy is asking $3500. Said it has a wood bed but doesn't have the metal strips anymore so not sure what type of wood bed it actually has until I make a trip to look at it. Price is a little high from what he is telling me and what little I can tell from the pics. It has some rust in the rear fender, couple small holes in the doors but the rockers and cab corners are supposed to have been replaced and are in primer.

Boy, Howdy...
You will need to look at that and take more pictures
Yes, that is a 69 or 70 grill. 69-72 front end pieces interchange...
IF, IF it was a true 71, it would be worth a lot more to me, already having disc brakes, but not $3500.00
Either the seller's knowledge is incorrect, and full of BS or someone thinking the will find a fool............

This guy doesn't seem to know a whole lot about the truck. He bought it off of someone and just trying to resell. Basically he told me he drove it 10 miles and put some fuel in it and it ran and drove good. Supposed to have a new clutch and rebuilt carburetor on it but he said it seemed like it needed driven. So who knows. I am interested though.

Re: 70 front end?

Very hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like it could have a '69 grill insert. I have a hard time believing original paint, too.

Somebody may have laid plywood over the bed floor--wood or metal--or the original bed frame.

Were I you, I'd be interested, too, but I want to sort out the year issue, and I think I'd take cash in hand and start by offering about half to 2/3s of that depending on how the year., rust, and bed issues are resolved.

Yes my thoughts were to start around 2000 depending on what I see. These are the only two other pics i have of it. It looks to have a dent in the door as well and some rust starting at the top of the windshield.

Re: 70 front end?

Probably just has a sheet of plywood in the bed. That's what I did with the bed in a 67 Stepside I had.

Re: 70 front end?

That would already be in my driveway for that price. You don't find them up here like that.

Re: 70 front end?

Along with the grill, the front bumper and mirrors are from '67-70 also. I'm guessing that's not a '71. If you go look at it check to see if it is either 5 or 6 lug. '67-70 were 6 lug with front drums and '71 - 72 were 5 lug with discs. You can verify the year by the 5th digit of the VIN. A 71 should be 1, '70 would be 0, '69 would be 9 and so forth.

Re: 70 front end?

71 would be 5 lug with disc brakes, that would be easy to identify...If he's a seller...most folks start high, so they can come down, to make a sale, and if someone shells out $3500.00 that makes their day!!!

Re: 70 front end?

If I don't have to work tomorrow I will go take a look at it. Hopefully I can make that happen. I have always like this body style but have always had squarebody short beds. I currently have an 85 that I started restoring and also have an 84 factory 6.2 short bed 2wd.

Re: 70 front end?

Pay attention to the title. If it says 71 look at verifying the VIN numbers on the cab and frame. There could be shenanigans afoot.

Re: 70 front end?

I did look at this truck today. It is a 70 model and not a 71. The truck is pretty rough for the money. Trailing arms and cab floor braces are rusted though along with the cab corners, rear fenders, doors and front inner and outer fenders. Tailgate is beat up pretty bad and rusted. The bed floor was completely gone and replaced with that wood house siding. Definitely not $3500 worth or even close in my opinion.

Re: 70 front end?

Lots-O-Rust on that puppy that we can see and you mentioned the undercarriage is also rusty.

Not my cup of rust, but typical of what we find in NY area.
