Two piece driveshaft carrier replacement. Any help? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys,

I just picked up a 71 LWB that needs a new carrier bearing for the two piece driveshaft.

Any tips that you guys can think of on replacing one? I already bought a new Timken bearing. Pretty straightforward work to me but I thought I would ask anyways.

BTW...Is there any way to go to a one piece driveshaft??

What about something a bit stronger? I am building a 400+ hp SBC to go in this truck and I wonder how much stress this design can take? Any help there???

I got my old one off with a propane torch and beat the crap out of it. Took a bit but it came off. To make the install of the new one easy I put the end of the drive shaft in ice water for about 30 minutes while the new carrier bearing was in the wifes oven baking at 175.... She wasn't home! It was snug but went on fairly easliy. L8tr, Mike

Chris there is a billet carrier bearing out that would stand up the the 400 poines better than a stock rubber one... As for a 1 pc shaft it would be too long and vibrate like hell from what I have been told and read on this board... BTW if you use a press the bearing will slide off and on easily...

The regular one has worked well for me since I figured out how to install it correctly. I use to blow them out once a yr. You need to leave the bearing mounted but loose until you get the rear shaft mounted and tight to the rear end. Then give it a shake so that it centers itself then tighten the bolts. I'm going on 2 yrs now with no problems.

Use a long tailshaft transmission with a custom driveshaft. (Still makes for a LONG driveshaft!)

I took my shaft to NAPA and they took off the old one and pressed the new one one for $30. I know it's pricey, but it was done correctly and I didn't have to sweat or skin any knuckles
