A company we did the maintenance for had them in C50's with 2 speed rear ends. I also ordered one in a 78 2500 4wd GMC. The guy I sold it to still has it with 225000 on it and it's never been torn down.
Yeah. He's still got another 25,000 to go.

Mines a automatic too. I wonder if that's kinda rare? I'm an amputee so I needed the automatic and was glad to find it.

Re: 1972 Chevy C20 with 292 1st P.U. owner

After I posted about mine, I was on another thread and found out my truck did come with power brakes. They were standard equiptment. That's why it wasn't listed on the glove box door.

Re: 1972 Chevy C20 with 292 1st P.U. owner

I ordered it from Amazon when the original one crapped out. I kitted the old one, but the massive leak turned out to be a crack in the bottom of the bowl. I didn't feel like JB welding it so I got the new one. It's probably a chinese knock off.

Thank you,

Any difference in throttle response or lagging? I've heard that the venturi may be bigger from the factory for the 292.

The response is great now, but the old carb wasn't bad. The old carb was so worn out and leaky that it would be hard to really compare them accurately anyway. The venturis are the same, but the new one isn't specifically meant for a 292 since it's generic and can be used on a 235 and 250 as well. I've found that it's jetted a little lean in my assessment, probably because of it's one size fits all nature. Because of the long stroke and low compression I've been able to run a lot of ignition advance and the distributor that I installed has a quick mechanical advance and adjustable vacuum advance that I topped out it's real snappy. I'll probably adjust the metering rods to the specs for the 292 one of these days and it should run even better, but that will probably hurt the already dismal gas mileage. I've tried non alcohol gas and it definitely runs way better an the 10% alcohol so I assume that's what it's jetted for. That's great here in Nebraska since it's 30 cents less a gallon. I'm an old mechanic with a great deal of carb experience so I love having something I can tune without having to resort to using a laptop and dyno.

Re: 1972 Chevy C20 with 292 1st P.U. owner

292s were never considered an economy engine. They are intended for use in a work truck, with reliability and grunt torque. I remember when 25 cents a gallon for premium at the Arco station at Cahuenga off the Hollywood Freeway [101] was considered a scandalous rip-off.
Gas and oil were cheap expendables when these engines were designed.
I don't know where to get alco-free gas in my area, but once when you could still buy Tetra-ethyl-lead additive [1 Qt/20 Gal], I got a speeding ticket because my engine was running so much smoother, I thought I was driving slower.

Thanks for the response. I'm going to strip mine down and inspect it today, see if it warrants a rebuild kit.
