hi-cap oil pan question

I,am building a new 350 / 350hp engine for my 72 c10 and have a oil pan question. In order to install a h/v oil pump i need a pan that holds 1-2 quarts more oil. For you fellas that have done this what oil pan did you use. Preferably low-buck type. I,am gonna run a 1 1/2 qt oil filter.

I have not done it but I would think the GM Z28/LT1 pan would work.

I am inclined to believe the OP is concerned about the HV pump running the pan dry. I have heard it before.

I have a 406 build with a Canton 5qt with a scraper, and a Melling hv unit that's been ported, it hasn't shown any signs of oil starvation in the 10 years it's been running. Made plenty of passes down the 1/4 mile.

I need to correct myself- it's a ported melling pump, but it's a normal flow model.

Why do you wanna run a high volume pump? Just curious.

I am running this larger pan RNB-264-132 along with this extended length WIX 51794 oil filter on my L31 5.7/350.

I decided to just run the ac delco 2 qt oil filter with stock pan.

I'd have to say that the amount of time spent at high revs in a quarter mile probably isn't long enough to empty the pan. Trans-Am racing, I'd say yes. It's the reason the Z/28 got a 9 quart pan. Then again, I had a '64 Malibu SS with a 283 and a Powerglide that I put a 4 bbl and dual exhaust on and ran it at 120 MPH along the coast for many miles without exploding it. Bone stock except for that and an advance curve kit. I bet that farmer who pulled out onto the highway on his tractor right before I went by is still looking for his hat.

Almost universal consensus is SBC don’t need nor do they recommend a high volume pump. On all my builds I run the Z/28 standard volume higher pressure pump. Even if I have a large cap oil pan.

THe Z/28 came with a 5 quart oil pan FWIW. It had extra baffles to seal in the windage tray. I have one in my shop.
