Are tachs year specific?

Was there more than one style of tachometer? If so is there an easy way to tell which is which? I'm culling and only want to keep 71/72 stuff. Don't want to accidentally let one away that I wish I would have kept ... Thanks.

Re: Are tachs year specific?

The only difference is 6 cyl, or 8 cyl. Of course you have the few that actually came in pickups, and then the many that came in the large trucks, like the “Vacuum” gauge that people will put into a pickup dash, and call it factory.

Re: Are tachs year specific?

2 different diesel tachs with redlines, 6 cyl and 8 cylinder tach. I believe they are all the same for the years.

Re: Are tachs year specific?

No difference, just like other gauges 67-72. Only difference through the year was the 67/68 with headlights & wipers on left/choke on right and 69-72 with headlights left/wipers right.

Re: Are tachs year specific?

Ok thanks. I have a gauge set that all it has left in it is the tach. It says 8cyl on the backside so I can use that on 71/72 since all plain ol gas engine 8cyl tachs are the same 67-72.

Added a little extra in there in case someone does a search =)

To get really technical, yes there are differences in electric tachs but you would have to take one apart to see the difference. They all look the same assembled with the cardboard protector installed. Messing around with clusters I've found 3 different styles of tachometers with the brass type magneto being in earlier clusters and the silver one in later years. I'm curious if the difference was a different ac delco plant manufacturing these and would love if anyone had any input

Great information. And yes, I notice the same differences. What I want to know is why most are 265 but occasionally I see 400 stamped on the circuit board in the tach. I don't have photos but wonder why the different numbers.

Good job explaining Curt. I also notice differences in fonts on gauges. You have to look very close but there are differences. Not all of these gauges the general used were from the same source. I am sure of that. To most, they all look about same but when you touch a lot of them, these differences do start to show.

I have found some 70 Clusters with both so a mid year change is possible.

Noted, thanks! I swear the height of the indicator also changed but I no longer have the later speedo to compare?
