I’m not 100% but for patching it up wouldn’t fibreglass filler be good for it?

If its rusted so bad that it has a one inch hole in it, probably best to find a better donor and paint it..

JB weld also works very well. Cut a 2" metal patch and tape it to the back, blob of JB weld over and in the hole, cover with tape if needed till it drys...24 hrs...sand smooth and paint.
