Best Black Paint to Paint 1971 Grille "Headlight Black" Detail?
Hello,
The black painted detail that surrounds the headlight bezels on my 1971 Blazer has become so cracked and falling off that it's time to repaint that area with the grille off the truck and the area masked off. I wanted to ask the group a few questions about this process: 1. What's the best paint to use that will stick to the chrome and look factory? 2. What the best way to remove the old paint without damaging the chrome? (maybe Brasso, Paint Stripper, Oven Cleaner?) So far I've removed most of the old paint with Brasso (a slightly abrasive metal/chrome polish) 3. Any special prep to the chrome to get the paint to stick? Thanks! -Ian |

Years ago I had chrome trim on the front and back windows of my camaro. I wanted them satin black like the Z-28 had. I used Yellow Zinc Phosphate Primer and then painted with a rattle can. It held up for years and still looked good when I sold the car.

I use Duplicolor low-gloss black engine paint. Perfect look and hangs tough on top of chrome or anodized. Not shiny and not flat. There is ceramic in it and it's made for heat. So the sun isn't hard on it. Good thing for the abrasion the face of your truck faces. I did my '72 in '01 and still looks good. That's 18 years and she's no garage queen.

I'm a pretty big fan of the SEM trim black, comes in the bigger spray cans. Pretty much all the SEM products I've used have been great. The grille itself has a clear anodizing on it thats pretty hard to get off without serious elbow grease or serious chemical, so I wouldn't worry too much about messing it up.
