Not sure what I'm looking at service bed etc.
I know its a C20 that looks to be converted from 350 auto to a big block 4speed. Owner wants to keep big block so pulled the motor. Good clean truck otherwise. Whet is the service bed. Is it from the 1971 era? What about the deep wheels, they look special? Also is the air dealer installed or aftermarket?

The body is real solid. The bed and deep wheels caught my eye as maybe something special.?

Re: Not sure what I'm looking at service bed etc.
Looking at the SPID, I would say the customer ordered it specifically to carry a service bed. The AC was probably dealer-installed, although there were a lot of shops that did that as an aftermarket service until AC became more or less standard.

What in the spid indicates that it may have been ordered. Was it a cab and chassis

Re: Not sure what I'm looking at service bed etc.
Yup. We used to send new vehicles that didn't have AC to a shop that would add it, when I worked for a dealer (or two). Though I personally would use factory air if I bought a new vehicle (which I did). Back in the day, I was too broke to buy a new vehicle, so I went to pick-a-parts and cobbled the AC systems together.

What about the deep steel wheels? Are they special. Tire is 33x 12.50 R 16.5 LT

Re: Not sure what I'm looking at service bed etc.
I’m certainly no expert but my guess is they were installed when the service bed was installed in order to accommodate more tire for the extra weight.

Re: Not sure what I'm looking at service bed etc.
So does the "z81 special camper" on the SPID include those wheels? I love that look and wanted to know if they were on some of these pickups from the factory or just aftermarket wheels. It's not my pickup---yet---so I can't pull them off to check if their Kelsey's. Doesn't really matter if I like them I guess.

Nope. Z81 actually is the code for the custom camper emblems on the front fenders. Looky here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=529966

Re: Not sure what I'm looking at service bed etc.
RPO R79 or RR2 got you the 10.00x16.5 tires on 8.25x16.5 wheels in 1971 if they were factory installed. R79 included highway tread tires and the RR2 was for on/offroad tires. Not seeing them on the SPID, chances are they were added by either the body upfitter that installed the service body, the dealer when the service body was installed or by the previous owner.

Re: Not sure what I'm looking at service bed etc.
I didn't see it answered , but the service bed does appear to be from the era
...it's the same brand as the one on my '68 (which like yours was ordered as a 'cab and chassis' so likely on there since day one) Nice truck by the way ![]() ![]() |

Re: Not sure what I'm looking at service bed etc.
His SPID/Model Number indicates it was ordered as a fleet side.

Re: Not sure what I'm looking at service bed etc.
It was common to install a low-profile service body on camper hauler pickup. Alaskan actually offers them. That truck wasn't outfitted to work and it shows. That's a survivin' camper hauler, a very generally well preserved segment in these trucks. Servis and Harbor were two common service/utility body manufacturers.

That's a great idea: those compartments vastly increase storage capacity and accessibility!

Re: Not sure what I'm looking at service bed etc.
Thanks everybody for you reply's and info about the add on. The pickup seems in great rust free condition. The engine he pulled was a 69 corvette big block. He told me it was a one year only corvette motor and still has it. Hummm.

Likely it was the rare one with the 3/4 cam and aluminum heads.

There sure is a lot of corvettes out there without motors. I wonder if anyone ever put a truck motor in a corvette?
