Exclamation 1955 chevy 2nd series WILL NOT IDLE! HELP

I have a 1955 chevrolet second series truck, 235 straight six. I have been havng problems with the richness from the fuel and adjustments on the carb. My wife drove the truck and she does not know how to use the choke and she fouled the plugs so I changed the plugs and found them to be extremly black. However now after I changed them the truck will not idle as before, but as I give it more gas it seems to run smooth. Idleling is a problem! Please help. Also if anyone could give me advice on adjusting the carb, the points, and even hints on tune-up procedures I would be much obliged.

Thanks,
Stuck on the road.
