Re: Out of the box cool ideas / upgrades.
Wish I could tell you what tank that is is. It's been years since I got it from the junkyard.

Re: Out of the box cool ideas / upgrades.
That is sweet man, thanks for the pics. I would like to do something similar with the fuel door, but haven't decided what I want to do about the tank. I still want to keep my spare tire underneath the bed

Re: Out of the box cool ideas / upgrades.
Hmmm, without even looking at my truck, I wonder if there is room for a saddle tank like the later Chevys?

Re: Out of the box cool ideas / upgrades.
I'm thinking about maybe fitting up a factory squarebody tank, but for now my tank behind the seat works good and doesn't fume up the cab. Got a bunch of other stuff I want to do before I get to moving the tank

Re: Out of the box cool ideas / upgrades.
Those saddle tanks were bombs they were mounted on the outside of the frame if you got t-boned they popped and the gass went into the engine compartment of the car that hit you you know what happens next

Also installed 4X6 speakers under the dash and behind the seat in the corners. A powered sub under the seats provides the lows.

Thanks!
I had the luxury of getting them water jetted at work. I drew up the pattern based on the slot design of the original dash speaker grille. |

Eh, more of a wife's tale than a factual problem. Millions upon millions of those trucks were made. I bet one couldn't scrape up 20 actual reported stories of it really happening.

Re: Out of the box cool ideas / upgrades.
I remember back in the day of the same problem with school buses. A very popular topic. But as raidmagic mentioned, not so sure of the actual numbers.

Re: Out of the box cool ideas / upgrades.
I worked at some dealerships back in the 80’s and there was a law suit against GM for that but iirc, it wasn’t won. Like others have said, there were some accidents where the tanks ruptured and caught fire, but not enough for a recall.

Re: Out of the box cool ideas / upgrades.
I'm not advocating on either side with respect to the side saddle tanks, but here are some interesting articles related to the subject.
The Center for Auto Safety report on "History of the GM Side Saddle Gas Tank Defect": https://www.autosafety.org/history-g...s-tank-defect/ You can find some interesting research done on safer locations for mounting fuel tanks in the website below. For example, mounting between the frame rails was found to be safer than the side saddle mount tanks: https://www.researchgate.net/publica...desaddle_Tanks |

Here is what I did for my radio. It is a cheap plastic cup holder/storage compartment. My dad had it in one of his trucks that I parted out. I had a radio that fit inside perfectly.

Original air cleaner top with K&N filter with lots of breathing room.
