Window regulator rebuild??
Well, the PO messed up the riders side window regulator and even drilled a hole in it.
IMG_0081 by Robert Moorman, on Flickr So I need to rebuild it. I have a spare drivers side, but no riders side. I can get it apart to replace the shaft, even got the spring off, safely I might add. IMG_0082 by Robert Moorman, on Flickr The Question: Does anyone have a trick to get the spring back on? Thanks.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
I put new springs in mine, as I recall it was easy if you crank the regulator all the way to the down side (I think - or maybe it was the up side...oh well, you'll figure it out). That way there's virtually no tension on it. But jeez, as chewed up at that spline is, I'd consider replacing the regulator.
Sorry if I'm posting too much today guys - it's pouring rain outside and I have nothing else to do!

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
Those splines aren't worth trying to rebuild.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
Dan, I was going to replace the worn shaft with the shaft in the second picture if I can get the spring back on.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
I have a pair of NORS rebuild kits that I bought off eBay years ago for mine. They have that shaft in them.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
Ok, got it changed out and it works fine. Looks funny until I can get the right rivets. Can't put the spring back with those long bolts.
IMG_0084 by Robert Moorman, on Flickr Now where to find rivets that finish out at 1/4" long and are 0.1455 in diameter...

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
Instead of rivets I've seen guys just use short machine screws with thin nyloc nuts.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
Pie, after looking for rivets on line, I think I'll try it your way. It looks like it would work as described. Thanks.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
I did one with rivets, new inner shaft bent!
Are you replacing the rollers too? I redid one regulator and bought a new one, but I can't get them to roll up quite right so keep us posted.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
Not replacing the rollers, just the one shaft. It seems to work fine.
What rivets did you use and where did you get them?

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
They came with the replacement piece. Had to carefully hold it all in a vise and use a punch to beat the rivets.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
I don't see the big deal, just put bolts. The only reason they used the rivets was for speed and they had no plan on them being rebuilt (they do commonly last 70 years! LOL) but bolts will work just fine.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
Thanks Brian, I'll stick to the bolts.
I did the factory style rivets on a vent window and they are a real pain without the factory setup.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
The Filling station has (shows) the pieces to replace that shaft. Plus they have the correct rivets but they are driven rivets. They also have the rollers.

Re: Window regulator rebuild??
Got some #8 machine screws with washers and lock washers to finish my repair.

Let us know how window looks once in. I'm still not sure what I did wrong.
