Anyone sell restored steering wheels for 1968 Chevy C10 or companies selling repros?
I am looking to buy a factory steering wheel for my 1968 Chevy C10. It would have had a red steering wheel. Is there somebody who restores and sells them or do you know if there is a company who makes a reproduction in red?
I know a guy who is selling a red steering wheel but it needs restored and has cracks in it. I am not sure how difficult they are to repair so I have not purchased it. |

Re: Anyone sell restored steering wheels for 1968 Chevy C10 or companies selling repr
No one sells a repro 3-spoke 67-68 wheel in red. Brothers sells an "OE" wheel for $300, but only in black. I don't know if this is actually NOS or just a mfr- licensed reproduction. I have heard the repop wheels from LMC are flimsy.
As far as your guy selling a red original wheel with cracks -- well at that point the color is immaterial, since you'd have to open the cracks with a sharp triangular file to about 1/4'' - 3/8'' wide, then fill in with a heavy self-hardening compound like JB Weld, let set up then sand it down for each crack. I used strips of emory paper rolled into cylinders and rubbed over each finger hole to smooth it out. Repeat as needed. When you like the shape of the wheel, you reshoot it with primer, then after that's dried, shoot it any color you want. I'm currently working on my original '68 Stepside's wheel. It took a long time to find the right shade for repainting. The Original GM "FAWN" is no longer avaliable. I will try a later GM color called "Driftwood Sand." If price is no object try the Brothers $299 wheel and shoot your Red over primer over the sanded-down Black. All steering wheels in this period are painted. Molded-in-color wheels came in MY '69 or later. How bad is your old wheel?

Re: Anyone sell restored steering wheels for 1968 Chevy C10 or companies selling repr
I was never able to track down the Nissan color. I even talked with the local Datsun/Nissan dealer's body shop guy, but he wasn't too enthusiastic about '68 Chevy Trucks and said without the right 3 or 4 number code he couldn't help.
I took my Steering Wheel [un re-painted on the inside] into O'Reilly auto parts and color matched it -- sort of -- to a can top of Duplicolor BGM0482 "Light Drift Sand Met" (49 WA220C ). SKU: 026916714770. A GM color, they say. If it's too bright, I can always overshoot the whole steering column which is also Fawn.

You can take it in to a auto paint supply store and they can take a picture of it to match the paint.

Is Saddle Fawn different from Silver Fawn?

Don't know if it's the same. But in 69 the color 525 changed to saddle poly. Much more gold in that color

Re: Anyone sell restored steering wheels for 1968 Chevy C10 or companies selling repr
I was only interested in an off-the-shelf spray bomb. Custom colors by an auto paint shop are beyond my budget.
Years ago, the Paddock used to sell Silver Fawn Poly in a spray can, but they have since folded. Was 525 also used as an exterior color?

Many paint suppliers will sell you a half pint. The special hardener and thinner and the paint will still, make your day, on what even that amount costs...

Re: Anyone sell restored steering wheels for 1968 Chevy C10 or companies selling repr
Yes it was . A quart cost me about 120$ with hardner and reducer. A half pint would be much cheaper.

Re: Anyone sell restored steering wheels for 1968 Chevy C10 or companies selling repr
Sorry this thread got sidetracked on a ''Quest for Fawn''. Some one found that thread, so that traffic should divert there.
Back on point, the '67/'68 wheels were not made of plastic like the '69 and later wheels. The earlier wheels were made of a composition [like skateboard wheels of that period] of material like ground nutshells in a binder around a wire form.

Re: Anyone sell restored steering wheels for 1968 Chevy C10 or companies selling repr
I have redone several wheels for my projects. Never tried to sell any of them though. Here are ones I have either fixed painted and complete redo.
1st wheel is in my 71 C 10 it's a 67 Chevelle SS wheel I did. My 64 SS Impala wheel I refinished and painted back stock. The 64 SS wood wheel I found on line for $50.00 I fixed. The 67 truck wheel I have cut down and putting it back together. I got it welded then other things started happening so I haven't finished it yet. One day I'll finish it.
