Starting problem
350 with quadrajet, starts fine when cold.
After warming up, turn it off and it cranks fine, but doesn't want to fire. Extremely strong smell of gas. Is the choke getting out of adjustment again (had choke problem a while back and adjusted it) ?? Appreciate ideas on what to look for or check.

Does the choke fully open when the engine is warmed up? If not adjust it so it does.
There the first thing to check Also check position of the choke when you try to restart it and smell the gas.

How's you mileage? Could be leaking well plugs. What year was the carburetor made?

Is your choke working? Do you get high idle when cold then when warm does idle drop to low idle position ( approx 600/700 rpm)?

I had a problem similar to that, and in addition I noticed black water blowing out of the tail pipes during cold starts. It turned out the choke pull-off was bad. It is also called a vacuum brake. You can test it with a mityvac tool, to make sure the diaphragm pulls the attached linkage.

Others asked, but is the choke open when warm? It should be. Take the air cleaner top off and look.
If so, crank the engine (try to start) with the gas to the floor. This often starts a flooded engine (too much gas in it). |

You probably have a leaking needle & seat. After you shut the engine off pull the air cleaner & look down the throat of the carb. If you can see gas dripping in the throat it is getting by the needle & seat. Also make sure the choke is open like the guys have said.

I warmed it up today, and yes the choke is about half closed.
Adjusted it and it seems to be good now. Starts right up when warm. I will be testing more tomorrow to make sure. Thank you to all who posted ! This is a great site with great members.
