1962 Deluxe Instrument Cluster Build
OK I need confirmation that I can combine the following items to make my dream instrument cluster. It is going to take some cash to put it together but before I start the collection I want to make sure I am getting the right things so here they are.
I also added some literature that says for clocks all Chevy IIs number 985581. So I am hoping when I get the tach and clock that they should slide in snugly and work with no problems except carefully drilling out a tiny hole for the clock bezel???? Thanks, AJ |

Sorry I can't confirm any of this AJ, but I want to say, I like what you've chosen and see the vision you have for the Cluster. It should turn out very nice; subscribed for the final results.

Re: 1962 Deluxe Instrument Cluster Build
Oh my Lord, I'd probably crack 5 instrument cluster lenses before I got the hole right.
Here's a question, since it sounds like you are wanting to know if the clock will slide in in the right empty panel as if it were stock. Don't quote me (in other words, somebody please correct me...) I THOUGHT that the only clock option in a 62 truck was for the one that was EXTERNAL to the instrument cluster - mounted to the dash and usually cost more than my truck...? Have never seen a factory in-dash clock on a 62. I realize the brochure shows a "clock" but the one for the truck looks like it's the face of the external one that was an option and that you have the Chevy II clock, perhaps. Now, that does NOT mean it won't fit or won't work. And an in-dash one may have actually been available - that's what I'm hoping to learn from this post. I think the clock you have will certainly look great, even if it does require mounting mods. If it doesn't require any, you'll have inadvertently started a mad rush of orders for that clock you bought... |

Re: 1962 Deluxe Instrument Cluster Build
I found a very similar 64-66 cluster that 198plus owned but I have not been able to figure out for the life of me what clock is in it. I think I read somewhere it came out of something late 60's and I am not sure if it is me or my eyes but I think it is white and not green. I could be mistaken. Any help would be great.

Re: 1962 Deluxe Instrument Cluster Build
So does anyone know if I am going to need to dremel or cut out the lower half circle on the clock side or does it just pop out? It is hard for me to tell from photos and I do not have a 60-63 deluxe instrument cluster yet.

Re: 1962 Deluxe Instrument Cluster Build
If you flip the guage cluster over, there are basically 3 main components. Looking at the back of the cluster...You have a pod that holds the tach, fuel and oil pressure guage.....the speedometer....and a pod that hold the ammeter, temp and either a delete plate, vacuum guage or air pressure guage.....or in your case a clock. The pods are screwed in to the back of the cluster. From the front looking at it as it were mounted in the truck....you have the metal bezel, a plastic lens that covers the cluster, a metal plate (which is what you will have to trim) and the cluster housing. They are fairly simple once you get into them. The factory clocks were externally mounted. Normally found on top of the dash in the center.

Heres a pic of aerotruk63's clock. This is the correct clock and mounting location in the center of the top of the dash

Re: 1962 Deluxe Instrument Cluster Build
I guess if I wanted to go more original I could look for a vacuum gauge and not have to worry about cutting anything. Does anyone know where I can find one of those?

Re: 1962 Deluxe Instrument Cluster Build
Heres a pic of the vacuum guage. It bolts in to the left pod and all you have to do is hook up a vac line to it. Simple install. These are pretty hard to find. Have only seen a handfull of them. Sorry bout the bad pic...with the chrome bezel you get alot of reflection

Re: 1962 Deluxe Instrument Cluster Build
Better shot of an original clock. Seen these in Ford trucks with a different base.
Corvair with a different base.

Re: 1962 Deluxe Instrument Cluster Build
How'd this clock swap ever turn out?
Looking at it, I think it's a great idea!!! I've wanted to do a clock in my instrument cluster, and I think this is the perfect fit. Because nothing is EVER simple in my life, I'd put the tach over on the driver's side spot, and the clock on the passenger side hole where the tach usually is, so my passenger can also see the clock if she wants to glance at it.
