Question Is this a Locker?

Sorry for the poor quality of this picture, it's supposed to be of the guts of a 12 bolt rear axle someone gave me. I was told it came from a 73 Blazer.

Couple of questions:
It looks like it has some sort of ratcheting mechanism, does that make it a locker?

Will the carrier fit a 72 12 bolt rear axle?

What's it worth, from what I calculated its a 3.07 ratio?

Thanks
Ron

How does it work or how is it different from a locker?

If you really tried to lock that one up in hard driving conditions... you'll be getting towed back... thats a governor style positraction. Those weights in the pic fly outward to engage the postive traction.

Lockers are typically two gears which engage to be a locked unit.

Positraction units for 1/2 tons typically in our vintage came with clutch pack positration... theres some slippage while it engages.

My preference would be a clutch pack posi in a half ton. Its not true lock up but its good in a bind and dosent blow up like the governor type.

Your probably better off selling that governor type to a diff shop... they sell them to owners of blow up governor ones a a lot more than clutch style.

Yep. Gov. Locker. That's the kind of differential carrier that comes with a pin you can pull and count to 3 before BOOM - grenade.

Detroit lockers look a heck of a lot more solid than that. Literally looks like a solid piece of metal in the carrier with square teeth that tightly fit together with a pin through the center. The idea is when the inside wheel turns at a different speed than the outside the halves come apart and allow the inside wheel to free spin...

How much do Detroit Lockers run for 12 bolts? $800-900??

What other locking type rearends are out there that can withstand some big HP??

A Moroso Brute strength diff is not a true locker but is a very strong limited slip. It has twice the clamping force than a stock 12 bolt limited slip and the case is much stronger. I had one in my 66 Malibu and it would always hold tight, it almost is too much for the street though on a car. They make them for 10 and 12 bolt car rears and the 12 bolt truck rear for around $450-$500 plus installation costs.

I'm on the same bandwagon. Those "Gov Pop" diffs are worthless. Any kind of horsepower or tires larger than stock will kill it qiuck. I've replaced dozens of them. They generally spit out little parts that will ruin your ring and pinion at the same time.

The Detroit Locker isn't made any more. They used to go for about $550+ new. Now you'll have to do some research to find a new equivalent. Since I'm not in the market (and haven't been since I bought mine 2 years ago) I don't have any info for you. You might want to ask the 4x4 guys...

Thanks for the info guys, it doesn't sound like it's worth putting in the truck I'm building for my wife.

I'll put it up on the board for $50 and somebody who already has a gov lock can have a spare.

Cobalt,
Tractech no longer makes a detroit locker/no-spin for the Eaton H0 axles, but they still make them for just about every other axle. They also make the detroit SoftLocker, which is supposed to be the same as an original but quieter, as well as a few other traction aiding devices.
