I want electric power steering - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Sounds like it'd be too difficult to wire up to an old truck, but sure would be sweet. I think the 04 Malibus are using this system.

Could you attach a pully/gear to the steering shaft and then mount an electric motor to the wheel well and link the two with a belt or chain? I think a belt would be safer so it could slip if something fouled up. The hardest part would be controlling it. you wouldn't want it to be all the way left or right every time the steering wheel moved. there would need to be a sensor that would tell the motor how far to turn based on input from turning the steering wheel like something from R/C cars or planes.
They did something like this on Monster Garage Remote Control dirt-track racer

Couldn't you hook up an electric motor to a normal P/S pump? That seems like a lot easier, and with long enough hoses, you could mount the whole scene pretty much anywhere.

Not me, I like the older stuff, easier to repair it without thinking about it. I work on enough of the new stuff during the day.

Yeah, the electric brake caliper is a bit scarey - especially when they say Low risk—first step to full "brake-by-wire". Looks like they only put them on the rear wheels at this point but will surely plan to put them on the front too. Ok with me as long as it comes with a nice steel anchor and chain just in case!

I suppose you'd have to find a donor vehicle if you wanted any of their gadgets.
