Bolt in 6 Cylinder
What would be a good choice for a hopefully bolt in upgrade for a 1950? 230 or 235? Or are they pretty much both the same?

They are 2 different animals. The 235 is almost a bolt-in swap. The 230 is a better engine but takes quite a bit of modifications. A 250 with external manifolds is the same as the 230 but is a better choice.

Is there an easy way to tell the difference between the 230 and the 235? Is there a resource that shows the modifications needed for each motor? I have a line on each motor but the 230 would probably be the better motor of the two but I would be more interested in an easy bolt in swap and something that would look original.

235 has a side cover that covers the passenger side of the block up to the top of the block. (216 side cover also covers the side of the head) '
The distributor is about centered in the middle of the side of the block. Oil filter if it has one will be a bypass filter in it's own housing usually attached to the intake manifold on a 235. 194,230 & 250 have two smaller side covers on the passenger side of the engine, There will be a spin on oil filter towards the front of the block on the side. distributor will be close to the front on the side and the pads for the motor mount will be to the rear of the fuel pump. This is a well decorated 230/250 but you can see the identifying points. Here's the straight on side shot of a less decorated 230/250 292, Side covers are a bit over six inches tall. The fuel pump will be behind the pad for the motor mount on the right hand side. This is the 292 I have in the garage waiting to go in the 48.

I should note that when you put the later sixes in an AD Chevy you have some interference issues with the fan and radiator. There are still issues with a 235 but a pump and pulley change fixes that.
