My baby started bleeding this weekend

My baby started bleeding this weekend. I was on the freeway and my crankshaft pulley completely sheared off and cut open my lower radiator hose. I have no idea what caused it all the bolts are tightened down to the piece of the pulley that is still attached to be balancer.

I had that happen once on a 350, the hub of the harmonic balancer was cracked and the balancer flew off the end of the crankshaft while I was driving down the road. I would guess your pulley had a crack, either from old age or use, or possible improper installation.

Bummer!

50+ year old pulley. No telling what happened to it over the years.

So if I am understanding correctly, the crank pulley came apart? Had you noticed any vibration prior to this happening?

correct. I had not noticed any vibration. But it was making a little squeaking sound mostly when first starting it up. I don't know how old the pulley is it's a 350 that I don't know the age of.

I haven't seen a pulley come apart like that before. It must have been damaged or cracked and you just did not see it. All I can say is just replace the pulley with a new one and keep an eye on it for a bit.

Re: My baby started bleeding this weekend

I took it to the mechanic yesterday because I wanted him to diagnose the cause and not just fix the problem. He said that the rod for the water pump pulley also go bent in the process. The water pump is less than a year old. he also said it put a dent in my radiator but it is not leaking. the crankshaft pulley might have been cracked.
