putting drum back on?

okay, we changed the brake cylinder and brake shoes, got it all put back together, but.... we cant get the drum back on there. the brake shoes are expanded out to much to allow the drum to be put back in place.

there is a adjuster that you will need to run back in to get the drums back on.

Yeah like phantom said. There is an adjuster that goes between the shoes at the bottom. You have to push the adjusting arm out of the way so you can turn the wheel with the teeth on it. Adust it all the way in, and push the shoes in. Now your drum should go on just fine...

okay, STFU jon!!!
i swear that i took the parking brake off!!! somebody must have put it back on!

new problem, maybe....

my dad doesnt seem to think its right, but the driver's side brake is doing the same thing, and we havent worked on it yet.
we were bleeding the brakes, and i think we got all the air out, but anytime i hit the brakes, no matter how hard i hit them, the rear brakes do not move at all. it was getting fluid, cause we did bleed them, but none of the springs or shoes or cylinders will move.

does the car have to be running or driving for them to work?

well, we got it all done, it will brake, but not very well. it is actually braking worse. i think we got all the air out, we did bleed it about 3 times on each side.

but it makes a whoooshing sound whenever i hit the brake

That WHOOSH sound is your power brake booster leaking. Time to replace it and the master cylinder at the same time.

thats what i figured

its been doing it since the engine has been in, and probably back before october when we pulled the old one

hmm..... gets me thinking though, i wonder if i should just go ahead and get all the parts mike got so i can start on the disc convertion too, since i plan on doing it that way anyhow.

either way, where is a good place to order a booster/master cylinder for my truck?

Eric, I can almost guarantee that you haven't gotten all of the air out yet. I have run into this problem numerous times with GM vehicles. You likely have air trapped in the proportioning (sp?) valve. This normally happens when the master cylinder goes dry. It may seem that you got it all out (no more air coming out of the wheel cylinder), but it's likely just trapped up front. Bleed them at the valve. I know it's a b|tch to get at, but it's gotta be done. Then bleed them again at the back. Once or twice, I've had to resort to lifting the rear of the vehicle high up in the air, and letting it sit a while so the air would bleed upwards. I feel for you, it can be a pain.

the master cylinder wasnt dry. the front of it(rear brakes??) was very very low, but there was still fluid in it.

also, everyonce in a while, there is a little bit of fluid covering the front of the brake booster, which tells me that i guess the master cylinder is going out?

http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/chas...on/booster.htm

i did both those tests and everything seems to be working good. so i guess i'll take a few hours and bleed the whole system.
