A Simple Question About Replacing Original Fuel Tank - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi folks. It's been a while since I've participated in the forum. I'd like a little advice on replacing the original fuel tank on my 72 C10. It seems that the old tank is coughing up rust to the point of unseating the carburetor float valve, so I ordered a new one. My question is; should remove the rubber boot on the filler neck before I remove the tank or should I try to just pull the old tank through the boot. I'm sure I can try to figure a way to do it but I'd like to get advice from someone here that has done it before. Thanks!

I've replaced my boot when I painted my truck but didn't pull the tank. I cut off the old boot and slid the new boot over the filter neck still in place. If your boot is new and pliable you may be able to pull the boot off first. I'd just buy another boot to make it easier and cut the old one out.

On my 1969 truck I removed the tank by pulling the neck through the rubber grommet. Then I put a new grommet on, and inserted the new tank's neck through it. Use gloves. The edges of the tank can be sharp. I had to bend the bottom edge of the tank metal to make the edge line up with and meet the mounting holes. All of the screws fit except one hole was off by an inch or so, so I left that bolt out. I put a piece of scrap tail pipe on the neck and used it as a tool to bend the neck to be centered in the hole so I would not have any gaps between the grommet and the filler neck.

I've done numerous tank replacements. If your grommet is good leave it in place. The new tank will fit through the grommet when pulling or installing. The 71 and 72 trucks have EEC tanks and I've yet to find the right grommet. The grommets that I've bought do not fit snuggly enough, my guess is that the non EEC tanks have a bigger fill neck.

It looks like Classic Industries has the 2 different sizes. I got the larger size on the left from them, for my 1969 truck.

Use lots of soapy water on the grommet.
