I just replaced all the brakes on my 69 3/4 ton chevy truck, and about a week and a half later, I started hearing this grinding type noise. I thought it was the brake shoe constantly rubbing the wheel drum. So I took it off and that wasnt it. I have no idea what else it could be. Any thoughts

thanks in advance.. P.S. it only does it while moving.

Is it coming from the front or rear of your truck? Does it go away after you apply yor brakes or does it grind "brakes on" and "brakes off", and I take it your truck has drums all the way around? Are your wheel bearings OK. Doug

it is coming from the rear. It does it while applying the brakes or not, but when I am at a stand still the noise is gone. I looked at the wheel bearings and there was a little wear. They were repacked with grease when the brakes were done. I just have no clue

Differential problems maybe?
You might want to drain the oil and check for metal flakes.

Check the pumpkin, as Aces said if thats not it then we can go other places. Also were the bearing put in right???? Hope you figure it out.....

Did you have the drums turned? If not you will get strange noises and bad braking until the new shoes wear-in to meet the drum surface.

check for rust on the drum edge rubbing on the backing plate it will show a slight polished mark
take a chipping device (your choice) and knock all the rust off of the drum
check the backing plate was not bent or moved on removal of drum
a little rust will make a lot of noise
a sure test is to saw the wheel side to side while moving foreward slowly
if the noise increases on the turns the drum is flexing and rubbing on the backing plate
just my 2 cents

Also Check to make sure the pinion bolt is tight...

hehe Just speaking from what happened to mine when it was making that sound...Tightened it up and it went away like magic.

One thing to check out is your carrier bearing. When mine went out I thought it was something in the rearend or rear brakes due to the reconasins ( noise traveling down the drive shaft to the rear of truck ) After checking out every thing that you are checking. I jacked the truck up, started it up, put it in gear. Got under the truck and found the bearing was the culprit.

what is the carrier bearing?, and where is it located?, thanks for the help guys, it is greatly appreciated. I hope its just one of those things and not the rearend.

carrier bearing: on a 2piece driveshaft it's located at about the back of the cab and holds the front half of the driveshaft up in place
