Hmmmmmmmmmm..... Here's a wild guess.... gas tank? Maybe it has a leak.

You may want to also look at your sending unit gasket as well.

I recently had the same problem, I replaced the whole senging unit (my old one didn't work any ways for the gauge) but with it came a new gasket. I worked great no more smell of gas, well not as bad anyways.
